Yahoo! Closes Successful Charter Period


Yahoo! UK (http://www.yahoo.co.uk) announced today the conclusion of its initial charter period for advertisers on the site. During the successful charter period, Yahoo! UK signed nine advertisers, including BSkyB, Tesco and the TSB Bank. Yahoo! UK has expanded its advertiser base with seventeen new advertisers such as Volvo, Guinness and Littlewoods, signed on for the first quarter of 1997.

In addition, Yahoo! Inc., the parent company of Yahoo! UK also announced today the end of its fourth quarter 1996 fiscal year. Traffic on Yahoo! sites increased to an average of over 20 million page views per day during the month of December 1996, compared to an average of over 15 million page views per day in September 1996. Yahoo! Japan, which is included in the above page view totals, increased to approximately 1.4 million page views per day during the month of December 1996 from approximately 1 million per day in September 1996. A page view is defined as one electronic page of information displayed in response to a user request. According to PC Meter, Yahoo! remains the number one Search Engine and Directory for the fourth quarter in a row.

Similar to the other international and regional properties in the Yahoo! network, Yahoo UK offers users a specially tailored, localised Yahoo! site that highlights the more than 27,000 UK and Irish Web sites that are among the 500,000 sites classified by Yahoo! Yahoo! UK also offers UK business and general news and sports from Reuters, and integrated access to Web-wide searching capabilities provided by Altavista (tm). Yahoo! UK is powered by desktop and server technology from IBM.

John Downing, Head of Electronic Distribution at Lloyds TSB and one of Yahoo! UK's original advertisers, said, "We have been very happy with the results of our presence as an advertiser on Yahoo!, which has given an important boost to traffic on our site."

UK is a compelling property for our users, content providers and advertisers," said Heather Killen, Managing Director of European Operations for Yahoo! "Moving forward, we are continuing to establish a global advertising network across the Yahoo!-branded properties."

Yahoo! UK, Yahoo! France and Yahoo! Deutschland are the first properties to be developed by Yahoo! Europe, a joint-venture between Yahoo! Inc. and Ziff-Davis Publishing. The European directories are part of a developing global family of Yahoo!-branded media properties in targeted geographic (Yahoo! Japan, UK, Canada, San Francisco Bay Area), subject matter (Yahoo!
