LONDON - January 15, 1998 Yahoo!, the world’s leading Internet media company, has announced that Fabiola Arredondo has been appointed as Managing Director of Yahoo! Europe. Arredondo takes over from Heather Killen who has led Yahoo! into Europe, establishing local operations and services in the UK, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Killen moves to Yahoo!’s headquarters in Santa Clara, California, to spearhead Yahoo!’s world wide expansion as Vice President, International. In this capacity she has responsibility for all the company’s operations outside the United States, which currently include Asia Pacific and Canada as well as Europe.
"Support from our partners and clients has made the past year and a half tremendously exciting for Yahoo! in Europe," said Killen. "Having established leading positions in these markets, I am looking forward to the challenge of integrating all our Yahoo! properties into a truly global interactive media network, and further developing the network in other parts of the world. Naturally, I am also thrilled to be able to leave the operational management of the European businesses in such capable hands."
Fabiola Arredondo joins Yahoo! Europe from BBC Worldwide where as Director of International Distribution, and previously the Director of Europe, Middle East and Africa, she was responsible for its television programme licensing and co-production activities worldwide. She was also a member of the BBC Worldwide Executive Board and of the ECM Board, a joint venture with Pearson Group and Cox Communications,Inc. for the development of the 24 hour BBC World news channel across Europe
Prior to joining the BBC, Fabiola was the Director of Strategic Planning and then the Vice President, International A&R and Marketing for the Latin America Region of BMG Entertainment, the entertainment division of Bertelsmann A.G. Educated at Stanford University and the Harvard Business School, Fabiola was formerly an investment banker with J.P. Morgan & Co. and Furman Selz Mager Dietz and Birney in New York. Supported by offices in London, Munich, Paris and Stockholm, Fabiola will lead the expansion and further development of Yahoo’s network in Europe.
Yahoo! has also announced its Annual Results for 1997, confirming its position as the leading Internet media company, reporting net revenues of $67.4m for fiscal 1997 compared to $19.7m in fiscal 1996, an increase of 242%. Yahoo! reported that its traffic grew to an average of 65 million page views per day during the month of December 1997, compared to the 50 million page views per day average in September 1997, an increase of 30%. A page view is defined as one electronic page of information displayed in response to a user request.
According to research conducted on behalf of Yahoo! Europe by Continental Research reported in June 1997, Yahoo! UK & Ireland (www.yahoo.co.uk) users have an average household income of £44,000, which is three times the national average. Respondents to the survey have a varied portfolio of financial products: 45% have a regular savings plan, 42% have a private pension, 42% have stocks and shares, 12% have unit trusts and 8% own Government stocks.
