Irish Picks - Scottish Picks

Picks of the Week: July 9th

We've had fun discovering those sites that make Yahoo! UK & Ireland one of the best places to find UK or Irish sites on the Internet, and we enjoy sharing a few of them with you. Feel free to send us a note about any sites you think we should consider for a future issue or any general thoughts and comments about Picks of the Week. Click here if you only want to view the list of sites.

Movies movies movies... here at Yahoo! we can keep you up to date with all the latest film news and reviews but sometimes a site comes along that captures our eye, and not just because it has pictures of Catherine Zeta-Jones on it. The UK Entrapment web site comes hot on the heels of the cinema release of this action thriller starring Sean Connery, and the aforementioned Miss Zeta-Jones. He's a thief, she's on his trail, but he proves to be a little more crafty and elusive then she first thought. No doubt they fall in love, even though he's old enough to be her grandfather. Still, the Entrapment site is full of info on the stars and filmmakers, there's a chance to view the trailers and best of all, three highly engaging if slightly frustrating competition games which are kind of 'retro' in style and fun to play.

If the thought of all that action and excitement is a little too much to bear then why not sit down and have a nice cup of tea instead? Tetley Teabags have finally launched their site, giving all us tea lovers out there the opportunity to meet Sidney, Clarence and the other Tetley Teafolk who have been a popular fixture on UK television adverts for years now. There's a screensaver to download and you can purchase all manner of Tetley gifts including tea-towels, oven-gloves and mugs. Forget about e-commerce, it's time to make way for tea-commerce.

When we were kids, just before we had our tea, we'd watch Children's Television. It used to be great and thanks to sausageNet, you can re-live some of the wonderful moments from cult and classic kid's TV. From Metal Mickey to Rentaghost, this is an exhaustive collection of some of the coolest programmes ever, with links to external sites and best of all, a fabulous sounds page containing all manner of WAV files. Delight in hearing once again the theme to Roobarb & Custard, Button Moon and even Mary, Mungo & Midge. Forget those annoying Windows sounds, sausageNet is what your soundcard has been crying out for.

Talking of crying... if you've ever cried out for help and advice and wondered where you can get the information you need, Adviceguide may just be able to help. Whether it's about a problem you have with a noisy neighbour, or a shop that won't give you your money back, this site from the folks at the Citizen's Advice Bureau contains a wealth of very useful information on all manner of consumer problems. Its straightforward, no-nonsense interface means it's easy to navigate, and there's advice here on everything from immigration to civil rights. Just remember, your statutory rights are not affected. Whatever that means.

Finally this week, it's time to grab your Handbag! That's an acronym for "hair and nails, diet, beauty and gossip", in case you were wondering. Winner of the top homepage award from Internet Magazine, this is a highly enjoyable spoof of fashion and beauty magazines, with a liberal dose of kitsch and a great deal of humour. Highlights include Millie Gadge's Postbag which is a parody of a letters page, the 'Are You a Pensioner?' quiz and Psychic Doctor Pam's advice. Popular themes throughout include scratch-card addiction, knitting and old cheesey pictures of seventies models. The site is cleverly conceived and well written throughout.

That's all from the Picks team this week. Enjoy the sites.
