Worldwide Picks: - USA - Aus/NZ - Canada - France - Germany - Spain - Italy - Norway - Sweden - Denmark - Brazil - Asia
We've had fun discovering those sites that make Yahoo! UK & Ireland one of the best places to find UK or Irish sites on the Internet, and we enjoy sharing a few of them with you. Feel free to send us a note about any sites you think we should consider for a future issue or any general thoughts and comments about Picks of the Week. Click here if you only want to view the list of sites.
So it's lunchtime and you're feeling peckish... what do you do? Pop down to your local Marks & Sparks? Open your briefcase and pull out some sagging sarnies you laboured over for an hour last night? Or, if you can't even be bothered to go out during your lunch hour, do you go to www.sandwichesonline.com? Fresh sandwiches prepared to order and delivered to your door. It's finally happened... now you have an excuse to never leave the office. Never mind the highly inflated prices, the site is worthy for its colourful images, including the largest kiwi fruit picture you'll ever see on the web (probably) at the bottom of the information page. So if you fancy shelling out £4.50 for a chicken and red pepper chiabatta and don't mind waiting an hour, providing you're in central London, www.sandwichesonline.com is waiting for your order.
Some people probably eat noodles for lunch. They'd probably carry them in a noodle box, which, in the world of highly tenuous links, leads us to the splendid Mr Noodlebox. So what's it all about then? It's one of those sites that has to be experienced rather than explained... Essentially, it's a collection of little shockwave toys... click on a box and shapes and colours will start to twist and turn... it's all very strange but somehow intriguing. The creator, Danny Brown, writes that "Mr Noodlebox is not about 'concept' or experiment: it's about pleasant amusement". And it is both pleasant and amusing, sometimes spooky, sometimes strange, sometimes... well... see it for yourself and decide.
Still on a lunch theme, perhaps you like noshing on the odd bag of crisps. Another site using extensive use of Shockwave Flash is the official KP Discos site. Priding themselves on being the most "in your face crisps in the UK", this is a colourful, interactive affair which seems to have a penchant for vandalism... enter the (virtual) men's toilets and you can break the mirror and write graffiti on the walls. Go into the bar and you can smash some bottles. What this has to do with KP Discos, we're not quite sure, but delving deeper, there's plenty to keep you amused for a while including a dance contest, online chat, the strangest game of pinball ever and an opportunity to spin the decks as a DJ. Also, if you look really closely, you may just find a snippet of info about the nutritional value of the crisps themselves.
From crisp to crunch... A new UK site is giving music lovers out there the chance to purchase and download MP3s from some of Britain's best independent record labels. Crunch is a snazzy looking site which is easy to navigate and offers numerous techno, house and trance tracks to download for a mere 99p each and the chance to preview them before you buy. If Beethoven floats your boat, this is not likely to be your cup of tea, but the MP3 revolution continues to grow on the Internet, and don't forget that Yahoo! can keep up you up to date with all the latest digital music news.
Finally this week a chance to win prizes on the superbly irreverent Planet Trivia web site... perfect for those lazy Friday afternoons in the office. Not only do you get to answer questions on anything from Allan Partridge to the Spice Girls, but you battle head-to-head with other users. You have to register to win prizes, or to see your name up in lights as a top scorer, but if you only want to have some fun answering the questions, you can log in as a guest and still take part. So grab those encyclopaedias and surf on down to Planet Trivia... it's a bit like a pub quiz without the booze... or the company... or the music... or... okay, I'll go now....
