Picks of the Week - What's New - US Picks - Yahoo! Aust./NZ Picks - Yahoo! Canada Picks - Yahoo! France Picks - Yahoo! Germany Picks - Irish Picks - Scottish Picks
We've had fun discovering those sites that make Yahoo! UK & Ireland one of the best places to find UK or Irish sites, so we thought we'd share a few with you. If you have any suggestions, please send us a note about them. Also send any general thoughts or comments about Picks of the Week or even suggest sites you'd like us to consider for the next issue. Click here if you only want to view the list of sites.
Stepping away from the UK for a moment, in the historic city of St Petersburg there are 5 beautiful buildings which used to house the grand tsars and tsarinas but which are now home to one of the largest and most exquisite art collections in the world. The State Hermitage Museum has already received a $2 million grant from IBM for its multimedia kiosks and eventually hopes to have all 2.5 million works of art online. The site itself provides virtual tours and a wealth of information on what must be one of the most impressive museums in the world.
From Glasnost to Glastonbury... Back here in the UK, the rock festival season is upon us. The 1999 Glastonbury Festival takes place from 25th-27th June and bands playing include REM, Manic Street Preachers, Fun Lovin' Criminals, Fat Boy Slim and literally hundreds more. Select @ Glastonbury is the music magazine's special site dedicated to one of Britain's favourite weekends. As well as the ability to secure your tickets online, there's info on past events, the full line-up and the chance to send Glastonbury e-cards to your friends. Let's hope the weather holds up.
After all that frolicking in the mud and too many mind-altering drugs, those rock festivals could leave you pretty low on energy. Lucozade is a brand that is still going strong after all these years. Now they've hit the web too with a colourful and entertaining site. There's plenty to have fun with here from questionnaires to sound-file downloads, info on the variety of Lucozade soft drink products available and an opportunity to buy merchandise on-line.
Turning next to bottles of a different kind. Does the prospect of clouds in a bottle interest you? How about making your own fake glass? Still none the wiser? Well, if you've ever wondered how to make one of those crystal gardens like you did at school, or considered what dumb tricks you can do with an egg, then Bizarre Stuff You Can Make in Your Kitchen is well worth a look. The joys of amateur science can be yours to enjoy once again, and the site contains a bundle of experiments you can try in your very own home.
Finally this week, the Picks Team wants to give an honourable mention to a fun site that demonstrates the more amusing side of the Internet. Losers dot org lists a bunch of sites which don't quite cut the mustard. With categories like Goths, Punks, Nerds and Dorks, the world of badly designed or just plain weird home pages is there for you to browse at your leisure. Before you even get to the sites in question, Losers dot org is worthy for the comments alone next to each one listed. Click through to any of them and watch as garish colours, poorly animated gifs and infuriating midi files invade your senses. It's all good fun, and before anyone complains, all sites are submitted by the creators themselves.
