Picks of the Week: May 31st 1999

We've had fun discovering those sites that make Yahoo! UK & Ireland one of the best places to find UK or Irish sites, so we thought we'd share a few with you. If you have any suggestions, please send us a note about them. Also send any general thoughts or comments about Picks of the Week or even suggest sites you'd like us to consider for the next issue. "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster", so said Ray Liotta playing mobster Henry Hill in the movie 'GoodFellas'. This week, the Picks Team is going to make you an offer you can't refuse... better get ready to show us some respect, or we'll send the boys round...

"But, I'm funny how? Funny like a clown? I amuse you? I make you laugh?" Ah... Joe Pesci... what a star. The best thing about Wiseguys: The GoodFellas Website is its collection of audio clips from this eminently quotable film. If you're easily shocked, don't go near it, but if you're a fan, the site also contains some images, video and a forum. In addition there's The GoodFellas Multimedia Page, brimming to the rafters with all things Goodfellas... yet more audio and video clips and pictures galore. Just remember... "Never rat on your friends, and always keep your mouth shut."

"Now you come to me and you say - 'Don Corleone give me justice' - But you don't ask with respect. You don't offer friendship. You don't even think to call me Godfather..." 18 years earlier, Francis Ford Coppola's epic movie had just been released, and it's still hugely popular to this day. The Godfather Trilogy re-defines the word 'extensive'. It's a massive site dedicated to the films with plenty of things to keep both the casual viewer and die-hard fan interested. There's even the chance to laugh at Al Pacino's dreadful haircut in the final part of the Trilogy.

Still... don't know your 'babbo' from your 'boss' or your 'cafone' from your 'capo'? Perhaps the Mobspeak Glossary may help. So if your shylock keeps bragging about being a big earner for the borgata and is still threatening to do a piece of work because you haven't paid your vig... this is the place to come. Just remember who's the Capo di tutti capi, okay?

From gangsters to... "gangstas". It's not just TV and film that feature them, computer games have got in on the act too. Kingpin: Life of Crime is an eagerly anticipated PC CD-ROM game from Interplay which is both violent and depraved... the perfect combination for a massive hit, and attracting much controversy along the way. The Urban-Gangsta site is a little taster of what to expect. It features a great intro sequence and plenty to whet your appetite... unless the censors get their hands on the game before it's released and spoil the fun...

But it's not all fiction here at Picks Central. The Kray twins were a frighteningly real pair of brothers who terrorised London's East End in the sixties... murders, violence, gangland warfare, protection rackets... you name it... they did it. But The Kray Kampaign believes Reggie Kray should be released, having served more than the recommended 30 years of his sentence. The aim of the site is to tell the story of the Krays as it was: not to lay blame or glorify. There's plenty of background and history on the site as well as your chance to purchase some merchandise... "Thoughts, Phylosophy and Poetry by Reg Kray and the Poetry of Ron Kray" anybody? Yours for £7.95. And if you don't pay, we'll nail your head to the floor...

To end on a less menacing note, we may have already chosen a Monty Python related site on a previous pick, but our Australian friends at Stone Dead Productions deserve another mention, as they have lovingly transcribed the Piranha Brothers sketch as featured on Monty Python's Flying Circus, episode 14. Read all about the evil Doug & Dinsdale Piranha, Dinsdale's belief that he was being chased by Spiny Norman, a twelve-foot hedgehog, and Q Division's Harry "Snapper" Organs pursuit of them via the Bristol Rep. See, even crime can be funny sometimes...
