Picks of the Week - What's New - US Picks - Yahoo! Aust./NZ Picks - Yahoo! Canada Picks - Yahoo! France Picks - Yahoo! Germany Picks - Irish Picks - Scottish Picks
We've had fun discovering those sites that make Yahoo! UK & Ireland one of the best places to find UK or Irish sites, so we thought we'd share a few with you. If you have any suggestions, please send us a note about them. Also send any general thoughts or comments about Picks of the Week or even suggest sites you'd like us to consider for the next issue. Last week saw the launch of an exciting new website which, for the first time, links all the museums in the UK to one site. The 24 Hour Museum is not only tastefully designed, but offers a fantastic service. You can search by region, and even if the museum you're looking for doesn't have its own site, there are addresses and phone numbers in the listings to help you find them. Delving deeper, there are all sorts of fun things including the Young 24 Hour Museum, a site especially designed for kids, with colouring, links and the chance to meet 18th Century inventor James Watt.
Watt may have invented the steam engine but who invented the washing machine? Whoever did would no doubt be impressed by the way ACDO is promoting its products. There's more to washing powders and stain removers than meets the eye and the ACDO Laundorama proves it. This colourful site contains games and an online soap-opera (with more emphasis on the soap) but it's not all fun and frivolity... there's also a handy guide to those cryptic washing symbols you see in the labels of your clothes.
Talking of signs and symbols, The Safety Shop Online is more fascinating than it may sound. With literally thousands of industrial products from double-sided metal stanchions to warning stickers, The Safety Shop can keep you occupied for hours. If you've always dreamed of getting hold of 60 metres of hazard warning tape or your very own (legally acquired) traffic cone then The Safety Shop is the place to go.
Talking of traffic, the words 'Vorsprung durch Technik' spring to mind. The UK Audi site demonstrates that the German car maker not only applies smart design to its cars, but also to its web site. Enhanced with a liberal dose of Shockwave Flash, there's plenty here to drool over and a good dose of tongue-in-cheek humour. Who says the Germans take things too seriously? Select your Audi, watch the intro videos, choose your colour scheme and wheels... there's plenty of fun to be had at this good looking site. Now, how long's that waiting list for the new Audi TT again?
The Germans, along with the rest of Europe, will no doubt be looking forward to this weekend. Ehud Barak's victory in the recent Israeli Elections means there's no second round of voting, so the Israelis instead will be free to celebrate hosting the 1999 Eurovision Song Contest. This site from the BBC gives you the unique and undoubtedly exciting prospect of previewing the songs featured in this monumental televisual event. There's a forum for your comments, a trivia quiz, and you can even ask Terry Wogan a question, bless. Bet you just can't wait to see who'll end up with null points on Saturday night.
That's all from Picks Central this week. Enjoy the sites.
