We've had fun discovering those sites that make Yahoo! UK & Ireland one of the best places to find UK or Irish sites, so we thought we'd share a few with you. If you have any suggestions, please send us a note about them. Also send any general thoughts or comments about Picks of the Week or even suggest sites you'd like us to consider for the next issue. Last week, Scotland and Wales voted-in their new parliaments and there were local elections throughout the UK. The Yahoo! Picks team has just got its hands on this interesting debate from the House of Commons, a Prime Minister's Question Time which we thought had been forever lost in the annals of history...
Speaker: Order! Order! Prime Minister's Questions.
PM: Today, Madam Speaker, I have mainly been browsing the Internet for some cool and worthy sites.
Speaker: First question - The Right Honourable Mr Browsing.
(jeers)
Mr Browsing: Would the Prime Minister agree that excessive use of Shockwave on the Internet is a problem that needs addressing immediately?
(more jeers)
PM: The point is, as the Right Honourable Gentleman should be no doubt aware, that Shockwave can be used highly effectively. Take HQ3.net which was nominated for a BAFTA in the first interactive entertainment awards. This site demonstrates a wholly wonderful use of Flash and contains streaming audio, links to some interesting sites, cartoons, games and really allows the user to explore and interact with the site.
(resounding cheers)
Speaker: Order! Order! Settle down! Second question please, The Right Honourable Sir Anthony Search-Engine...
Sir Search-Engine: Would the Prime Minister agree that the building of a new footbridge across the River Thames would benefit Londoners, and be a suitable addition to the Millennium Celebrations?
PM: I am glad my Right Honourable Friend has brought up this issue. Work has indeed started on a new bridge linking St Paul's Cathedral to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and the new Tate Gallery. The Millennium Bridge Site outlines the project, and most interestingly, allows the user the opportunity to control a live Web Cam for ninety seconds and explore London's skyline.
(more resounding cheering)
Speaker: Order! Order! Would the House please calm down! Mr. Webwise...
Mr. Webwise: The Prime Minister has often expressed his concern over the speed that some drivers go on Britain's roads and motorways. Is there a better way to channel the excessive haste of many of our four-door production saloon cars?
PM: My Right Honourable Friend raises a valid point, and I beg him to look at the 1999 AutoTrader British Touring Car Championship Official Site. A most exciting sport, I am sure the House would agree, gritty and close contact racing in souped-up production cars. The site itself is as extensive as it is well-designed with facts, figures, news and pictures galore from the world of Touring Car Racing.
Speaker: Next question from Mr. Netsavvy...
Mr Netsavvy: Could the Prime Minister perhaps recommend something a little more light-hearted for the House to look at?
(raucous cheering and foot-stamping)
Speaker: Order! Order! Let the Prime Minister speak!
PM: Indeed, I can recommend such a site. The Comedy Butchers, described by The Electronic Telegraph - and I quote - "inventively surreal and satisfyingly childish", is an entertaining British comedy web site put together by three young writers. It contains sketches, columns, real audio and other amusing tidbits, including a wonderful spoof of Windows 95, which should keep Members of the House thoroughly absorbed through their extended lunch hours.
(much laughter and shuffling of ballot papers)
Speaker: Order! Order! Prime Minister's Question Time is over. Any other business?
(chaos, as the MPs rush out of the chamber to get to their computer terminals)
