Picks of the Week: May 10th 1999

We've had fun discovering those sites that make Yahoo! UK & Ireland one of the best places to find UK or Irish sites, so we thought we'd share a few with you. If you have any suggestions, please send us a note about them. Also send any general thoughts or comments about Picks of the Week or even suggest sites you'd like us to consider for the next issue. Click here if you only want to view the list of sites.

This week, the Picks Team is proud to bring you an extract from the little-known Oscar Wilde masterpiece The Importance of Being a Surfer...

Jack Surfing, his prospective bride Gwendonline and her mother Lady HTML are taking tea in Jack's Mayfair flat.

Jack:
There is only one thing worse than having Internet access and that's not having Internet access.

Gwendonline:
Oh Mr Surfing, you are so wise.

Jack:
Indeed. I have nothing to declare but cool sites.

Lady HTML:
Cool sites, Mr Surfing? Perhaps you could be so kind as to explain to a lady of advanced years precisely what it is you are talking about.

Jack:
But of course, Lady HTML. I've found five cool sites... On the Internet.

Lady HTML (aghast):
The Internet?! Mr Surfing... to find one cool site a week may be considered reasonable. To find five seems excessive.

Jack:
They say that nothing succeeds like excess.

Lady HTML:
Enough idle talk, Mr Surfing. Do not hold us up any longer. Tell us the sites that you have deemed 'cool'.

Gwendonline:
Oh yes, do Mr Surfing!

Jack:
Have you ever kept a pet, Lady HTML?

Lady HTML:
Mr Surfing, pets these days are something associated wholly with the working classes. I must confess I have 'kept' a lap-dog in my time, but now we only breed horses.

Jack:
Nevertheless, Lady HTML, Petplan can provide insurance for your animals, whether they be cats, dogs, rabbits or horses. They even have a section listing some amusing claims.

Lady HTML:
What you consider amusing, Mr Surfing, is of no interest to me.

Gwendonline:
But mother, this site is so full of interesting information. There's hints and tips on looking after your pet, too.

Lady HTML:
"Hints and tips?" I am most disappointed in your language Gwendonline. Please, do continue, Mr Surfing. What is your second site?

Jack:
It is Askmagpie.com.

Lady HTML:
And what, Mr Surfing, is that?

Jack:
It is a directory of over 6000 magazines and journals that you can find on the Internet.

Lady HTML:
I rarely read magazines. They are too often full of gossip and conjecture.

Gwendonline:
But mother, whether it be Russian literature, antiques and art, corporate networks or sales and marketing, Ask Magpie is sure to list it.

Lady HTML (opening her browser window and peering closely at the screen):
It is indeed an admirable service. You have chosen wisely, Mr Surfing. Now, I believe you wish to take my dear Gwendonline to be your wife. What do you know of the married life, Mr Surfing?

Jack:
I use Confetti.co.uk, Lady HTML. A new Internet service designed to make one's wedding experience stress-free and enjoyable. With advice on all aspects of planning the wedding, from the engagement to the honeymoon, it contains a wealth of information for any prospective bride or groom.

Gwendonline:
But surely one cannot learn about love and romance from the Internet?

Lady HTML:
Never speak disrespectfully of the Internet, Gwendonline. Only people who cannot get into it do that. Please go on, Mr Surfing, I am finding your choice of sites most intriguing.

Jack:
I do believe we live in a magnificent country. Brittania.com is an online gateway to the British Isles. From a virtual tour of London to a guide to the best museums in the nation, this is an extensive site that even includes biographies of British monarchs and looks at some of the ancient sites and landscapes found on the UK mainland.

Lady HTML:
You have shown a great deal of patriotism in your choice, Mr Surfing, which is to be admired. But tell me one more thing: Where do you learn such wisdom?

Jack & Gwendonline (together):
Why... the Random Oscar Wilde Quote Generator of course!

Lady HTML:
Splendid. It would appear, Mr Surfing, that you have passed.

Jack:
Passed?

Lady HTML:
I see no reason why you should not marry my daughter.

Gwendonline (joyous):
Oh mama!

Jack (to Gwendonline):
My own one! It would seem that today I have, indeed, learned the Importance of Being a Surfer.

(They all laugh as they continue to chomp on their cucumber sandwiches)
