Picks of the Week: April 26th 1999

We've had fun discovering those sites that make Yahoo! UK & Ireland one of the best places to find UK or Irish sites, so we thought we'd share a few with you. If you have any suggestions, please send us a note about them. Also send any general thoughts or comments about Picks of the Week or even suggest sites you'd like us to consider for the next issue. Click here if you only want to view the list of sites.

At Yahoo! we like to keep you up to date with all the latest tech headlines, but if you're itching for more, then T3 Magazine may be just the tonic. From the best in hi-fi, digital cameras and new computers, as well some intriguing gadgets along the way, T3 not only outlines the latest and funkiest new technology, but may be able to answer some of those techie-questions you've never quite been able to figure out. Want to know what a megapixel is? Ever wondered how a lava lamp works? T3 has the answers.

Why does my computer crash? T3 may not be able to answer this, but someone out there can. Windows 98 Annoyances is a complete collection of information that can help users of Microsoft's latest operating system cope with anything it decides to throw at them. There's tips here on customising it, reducing clutter, improving performance and troubleshooting, and if you've still not upgraded, Windows 95 Annoyances performs a similar worthy task. Just don't tell Bill Gates.

So you've got your computer working and you've found out all about the latest developments, but where do you go if you want to delve even deeper? If you've ever wondered how an engine, a web page or even a cruise missile works, then How Stuff Works is the place on the Internet to find out. It's easy to understand and contains exhaustive information on almost everything. You can also post your own queries, or more entertaining, view answers to the questions that others have asked including: Which came first, the chicken or the egg? And believe it or not, there's a genuine scientific answer.

Another place to learn about the wonders and mysteries of Science is at The Science Museum, part of the National Museum of Science & Industry. Rather than just complimenting the exhibitions, research activities and commercial services offered by the museum, the site has its own specific Online features. If you've always been bemused as to why our mind and vision can play tricks on us or want to know what's so special about Dolly the Sheep, then The Science Museum web site is well worth a visit.

If all this techno-babble is making your head feel numb, then perhaps you need a little light relief, courtesy of The University of Bums on Seats (formerly Peckham Polytechnic). But be warned, this bastion of learning prides itself on being "the antithesis of academic excellence". It offers such riveting courses as Post-Feminist Needlework, Hairdressing & Ecology and even Mathematical Principles in Feng Shui. It's refreshing to find an academic institution not taking itself too seriously, so refreshing in fact that you could be led to believe that the University of Bums on Seats doesn't really exist...
