Scottish Picks: March 2001

Welcome to Scottish Picks, handpicked by our Scottish web connoisseurs. If you have a suggestion for a
cool site you'd like to see included in a future edition, why not send us an email?

No Mean City

This non-profit site is subtitled 'Glasgow Beneath the Skin.' It boasts sections containing news, chat, excerpts of the Open Directory, and an online dating service of questionable usefulness. By far the most interesting section, however, is the literature area. Here they web-publish complete novels, short stories, and poetry by aspiring Scottish writers. It's a treat to see such a forum for those attempting to continue Scotland's rich literary history.

Raindog

Raindog was started in 1991 by actors Robert Carlyle, Stuart Davids, and Caroline Paterson to challenge what they saw as a lack of bravery and innovation in Scottish theatre. The clean, well-designed site contains a history of this contemporary theatre company, reviews of past productions, and information on the Young Blood programme to encourage youth involvement in theatre. There's also a section on the BBC Scotland series Tinseltown, which was produced, written, and directed by the group.

Sara Sheridan

Continuing in a literary vein, our next site is for author Sara Sheridan, who was described by the Evening News as, "Not so much a writer as a one woman powerhouse." There's a brief bio, press clippings for her first three novels, news of upcoming appearances and readings, and a downloadable short story in e-book format. She has a new novella, The Blessed and the Damned, due out this May.

Carnoustie Golf Links

If you're a golfer, this site will amaze you. There's a history of the game at Carnoustie (home to six British Opens, the latest in 1999), sections on famous golfers who have played on the course (including Tommy Armour, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, and Tom Watson), and a webcam displaying the view from the roof of the Carnoustie Golf Course Hotel. Best feature: there are detailed descriptions (complete with playing tips, photographs, and diagrams) of all 18 holes of the notoriously tough Championship Course. Read up on this, and maybe you'll be the next Paul Lawrie!
