Scottish Picks: January 2001

Welcome to the first Scottish Picks of 2001. If you have a suggestion for a
cool site you'd like to see included in a future edition, why not send us an email?

Irn Bru

Far be it for us to condone any type of heavy drinking, but if any of you are awake enough to be logging on to this page on January 1st, perhaps we can take the liberty of recommending a hangover remedy. Our uncle Tommy used to like a drop of the other national drink of a New Year's morning to calm his queasy tummy, but for the twenty-first century version, try logging on to Irn Bru's revamped web site. They're promoting their site as the ultimate resource for winding up your mates, and while the various spoofs and pranks they offer may violate some of your resolutions, we doubt you'll be able to resist.

VisitScotland.com

Thankfully, the hype surrounding Madonna's wedding at Skibo Castle seems to have died down a bit, but sure as there'll be more than a few babies christened Rocco in 2001, Scotland's going to be the destination of choice for starry-eyed couples about to take their vows. Anyone planning a wedding anywhere in Scotland should start with the Scottish Tourist Board's own site, VisitScotland.com. They could do themselves a favour and make the wedding area of the site a bit easier to get to, (you first have to click 'Guide' in the navigation bar at the top of the page, then 'FAQ' from the margin, then select 'Weddings' from the drop-down menu) but when you get there every possible question you could have about recreating the Queen of Pop's nuptuals should be answered.

Chewin' The Fat

The BBC has a new site devoted to its latest Scotcom. The multimedia-rich offering features all your favourites from the show, including pensioners Jack and Victor, scone-munching Kelvinsiders James and Gary, and Ronald Villiers, Scotland's worst actor. There's also a 'Neducation' section, where you can learn to converse with Glasgow's finest in their own banter. You could spend quite a bit of time exploring the various sections and downloading sound clips of most of the popular catchphrases, including the Lighthouse Keepers' "Gauny no dae that?" and the Big Man's "Whit ur you lookin' it?"

Continuous Cool Country

What is it about the Scots and Country and Western music? While we don't all join gunslinger clubs or go line dancing every week, as a nation we do seem to have an infatuation with the music of the Prairie. To feed that infatuation, Radio Clyde has recently launched an offshoot focusing solely on Country. Continuous Cool Country, or 3C, is broadcasting digitally on 87.7 FM, or you can listen live over the web. The site itself features information about the presenters, a schedule, and a playlist. In the future, it will also include interviews with top Country acts.
