It is often said that e-commerce has been slow to take off in Scotland.
But things are changing, as NB:
(stands for Net Business), a glossy Scottish-Enterprise-sponsored magazine
is keen to show. The ezine has virtually everything you can find in
the print 'zine - interviews with Scottish CEOs, columns on dot com
legal and technical issues, profiles of Scottish businesses that have
gone dotty and shorter e-business news items. What's more, if you register
you can get the print version delivered free of charge.
One venture that is showing the way is In60.com,
an online video and DVD rental service. The company, currently operating
in the Edinburgh area, but due to roll out its service in Glasgow this
summer, promises free delivery of videos, DVDs, and PlayStation games
within sixty minutes of your order being placed. The site should come
with a health warning for couch potatoes: buying junk food (it also
sells Ben and Jerry's ice cream, crisps, soft drinks, and more) is just
too easy.
If you fancy a more potent brew than cola then there is always Last
Orders.com, which has been selling an array of alcoholic drinks,
from alcopops to champers, for some months now. It's disappointing to
find that the "online off-licence", also based in Edinburgh,
only stocks two single
malts considering the array of different Scotch whiskies there are,
but then it does guarantee next working day delivery to most parts of
the UK, which is convenient if you find a good deal.
If you are looking for something to wash down with your lagers then
pay a visit to Macsween's,
one of the more prominent haggis makers in Scotland. Unfortunately,
individuals can't order haggis online as the company only distributes
to food retailers, but if you ever wondered about the history
of the haggis or why Macsween's vegetarian
haggis tastes so good this is the place to go.
This month's picks could not go by without a mention of
The Millennium Open, which takes place from the 20th-23rd July at
the "home of golf", St Andrews. The slick-looking site already
has an array of articles on players, the course, and the championship,
with video, audio, and webcam lined up for when the championship starts.
Useful too, is the MediaWorld
section where you can search out all multimedia for say defending
champion Paul Lawrie or Tiger Woods.
Finally, the Scottish Canoe Association
have recently launched a new site covering the gamut of canoeing activities
from canoe polo
to touring. The
site could do with more information and support for recreational and
first-time canoeists in Scotland, but there are plenty of useful contacts
here and you may find help on the extensive bulletin
boards.
