Picks of the Week: 8th July 2002 |

Welcome to Picks of the Week for the UK and Ireland! If you have a suggestion for a cool, useful, or quirky site you'd like to see included in a future edition, why not send us an email? |
Wimbledon Championships
Well, just when you thought it was safe to go back to your computer after a month of World Cup action, it seems
Wimbledon has taken over the world. And
quite right too, given the calibre of some of the players making a racket this year. Sadly, Picks Team favourite
Anna Kournikova didn't make it through, although
being voted the World's Most Beautiful Woman by the readers of a well-known lad's magazine isn't bad as a consolation prize.
Ah well, at least we at Picks Central won our bet that Tim "Timmy" Henman could make it through to the semis...

World Worm Charming Championships
Now, if all those grass tennis courts have left you a-hankering after some more lawn sports; fret not. The little-known
pursuit of worm charming may be for you. The World Worm Charming Championships take place in Cheshire each year and are based on a set
of 18 rules devised by The International Federation of Charming Worms and Allied Pastimes. In scenes reminiscent of the sci-fi sandworm
epic, Dune,
entrants have to charm the worms out of the ground using only vibrations - no digging allowed! Last years biggest specimen? A massive
3.6 grams. Early birds indeed.

A Quarter Of
If the words 'Cola Cubes' make you salivate in anticipation, then read on. This, ahem, sweet site is an absolute dream for those
with a serious sugar craving. A Quarter Of stocks all those sweeties you'll remember from your mispent youth (and pocket money) and
will deliver them to your door (if you live in the UK). Among the treats on offer are Flying Saucers, those cool sherbert lolly
dip things, White Mice, and both kinds of Cola Bottles. There's also a competition to win a stone of sweets - at the rate we're going,
we're actually kind of hoping no-one at Picks Central wins! Pass the penny chews...

Richard O'Brien
"It's just a jump to the left, and then a step to the right..." If you're not familiar with Richard O'Brien - get ready for a
spanking! The perfect introduction to this Great British cult star is, of course,
The Rocky Horror Picture Show,
which he filmed way back in 1975 after the success of the stage show. This site tracks the prolific career of the multi-talented performer,
from his chorus line days, to a long-term stint hosting The Crystal Maze
and appearances in Dark City, Spice World and Ever After. And the news tidbits
about a possible "true sequel" to Rocky Horror will give you an excuse to practice your pelvic thrust.

Showcomotion
Grups (that's grown-ups to all you old fuddy duddies!) take heed - this one's for the kids. Recent years have been something of
a movie bonanza for the young 'uns, what with the release of the first Harry Potter film, and a
sequel
on the way. And of course such films can bring out the kid in all of us, as
Spider-Man
recently proved. Showcomotion is a celebration of kid's cinema, taking place in Sheffield from 8-17 July and features an impressive line-up
of films. The site has reviews written by youngsters, and a full guide to what's on. And don't worry; the opening and closing galas
start at 7pm so the little nippers won't be late for bed!
