Picks of the Week: 20th May 2002
|
|
Welcome to Picks of the Week for the UK and Ireland! If you have a suggestion for a cool, useful, or quirky site you'd like to see included in a future edition, why not send us an email? |
Uli Meyer Studios
From features like 'Space Jam' and '
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?,' to commercials and 2D
print work, this London-based studio has a really cool portfolio to show for its 12
years in the biz. Sky Digital viewers will also recognise the Jagger-alike Red Rocks
("press my button, baby!") campaign. The site lets you view all the animated sequences
too - you'll need Quicktime for these, but check out the 'Spider Smith' sequence from
'Lost in Space,'
which is very cool indeed. Although some of the sections are not yet finished,
the site provides some background detail about how it's all created, which is fascinating
for us layman types.

Young Scot
Young Scot is a cool and comprehensive portal that "offers incentives, information
and opportunities to young people aged 12 to 26 to help them make informed choices, play
a part in community life, and make the most of their leisure and learning." There are loads
of information channels, including Europe, leisure, money, and relationships, where you can
get the latest news and have your own say on the issues. We like the section on
Internet saftey, ("Now we aren't getting heavy here, just a bit protective - hey, we care!"),
which provides hints and tips for safe surfing. Can't argue with that, now, can you?

Buy Fresh, Buy Local
"Within the South East of England, each area has a distinctive character and a charm
of its own. If you get out into the countryside and off the beaten track, you will find
tranquil villages, stunning views and historic sites." They're not wrong, you know. This
site illustrates the value in buying local produce, whether at Farmers' Markets or
Pick Your Own Farms, but they are also keen to promote the countryside itself.
Investigate the listings for local food events, including Jubilee Picnics and the
Isle of Wight Garlic Festival, as well as
recipes
from the region. We'll be trying out the asparagus risotto later...

Drink Later
Just before last year's General Election, the
Labour Party
sent out text messages saying,
"Cldnt give a xxxx 4 lst ordrs? Vte Lbr on Thrsday 4 xtra time." Vowels or no vowels,
it seems this little teaser was in fact just that. Any sign of debate on the subject over
the last year in Parliament? Nothing, nichts, nada and it's really got the folks
behind Drink Later going. This campaign is not just about being able to drink more,
however -
it aims to bring in sensible licensing laws, so that the streets are not crowded with drunken
revellers all at one time, thus reducing pressure on the police and the public. Why not have
your own say?

Uniting the Kingdoms?
Uniting the Kingdoms? is an online exhibition examining "how the many kingdoms in
Britain and Ireland were conquered and ruled by the French, how some fought
back, and how the Welsh, Irish, Scots and English ended up with only one (Scottish)
king among them." It provides galleries, maps, documents and a very handy
Monarchs
list, making it useful both as an introduction to the Middle Ages, and as a resource for
the seasoned pro. The site is part of the Public Records Office, so you can be sure
you're getting reliable information too.
