Picks of the Week: 29th April 2002

Welcome to Picks of the Week for the UK and Ireland! If you have a suggestion for a cool, useful, or quirky site you'd like to see included in a future edition, why not send us an email? |
Richard III Museum
"Then since the heavens have shap'd my body, let hell make crook'd my mind to answer it,"
says the title character in Shakespeare's Richard III.
He was King of England for little over two years (1483-85), but he certainly made his presence
felt throughout the land. Is his reputation as the callous and brutal killer of his nephews (the
"Princes in the Tower") deserved? The Richard III
Museum in
York
stages a mock trial where Richard is placed in the dock and
charged with the two murders. After the cross examinations from defence and prosecution,
it's up to you, the jury, to decide.

Clubs In Crisis
After last year's threatened players' strike,
the footballing world hoped for a little breather from scandal and strife, but alas,
bang goes ITV Digital and the sport's credibility is once again in question. Without
TV money, the smaller clubs would struggle to survive. Clubs in Crisis was set up
by a group of
Brighton & Hove Albion
supporters after the club almost went bankrupt in 1996.
The site aims to "ensure that when any other football club comes into a crisis, then we
can generate support and help from fans around the world." Good job their supporters
stuck by them, because Brighton & Hove just gained promotion to Division One for next season!

bonjour.org.uk
As a nation, our foreign language skills are notoriously weak. Whether this is because
we don't start learning early enough in school, or expect everyone else to speak
English, it's still pretty embarrassing. So here's a cool site to help brush up on
French, and its sister sites for German and Spanish will be ready soon. The lessons
cover a variety of topics, including work,
family, recreation,
and
nationalities, and each section has audio aids and interactive tests.
Let's face it, we'd all better get practising so we can at least congratulate the French
on their impending
World Cup
win...

City Visitor
There's nothing like an innovative country guide to get the Picks' Team's juices
flowing, and this site is nothing like an innovative country guide. Heh heh, just kidding.
It's actually one of the best we've seen in a long while - not only does it contain
a wealth of useful information for towns up and down the land, but it's all presented
so well too. By clicking on the front page
map,
you get taken to the city's
individual page, which includes listings for shopping, recreation, entertainment, and
the like. There's also sport and local news, competitions, and My City, your customised
guide to the site.

Classmates.ie
The Internet is a perfect home for services like Classmates.ie, and there's been a
whole stack of similar web sites springing up over the last couple of years to prove the
point. With the success of
Friends Reunited, it's hardly surprising
that others
want to tap into the market. Classmates.ie has over 5000 schools in Ireland listed already, so there's a pretty good chance
yours is there. It's simple stuff - you log on, find your school, and then
register your details free of charge. Old chums wishing to contact you can then do so
via the site's email engine.
