Picks of the Week: 22nd April 2002

Welcome to Picks of the Week for the UK and Ireland! If you have a suggestion for a cool, useful,
or quirky site you'd like to see included in a future edition, why not send us an email?

Big Arse
Big Arse This site states that it's not suitable for young types, so don't say we didn't prepare you if you find something offensive on it. There we go, that's the firm but fair warning out of the way. For some people, any email that has 'FW:' in the subject line and a load of >>> before each sentence is destined straight for the trash. Not for the Big Arse folks, though. They've compiled an archive of funny and tasteless email attachments, including pictures, audio and text files, and Web links. The site could use a bit more building out, but at least you can say they are a selective bunch - not a 'Forward this to your ten best friends or really bad things will happen to you!' attachment in sight.

Cotswolds Premier Website
Cotswolds Premier Website If you're looking for a guide to the Cotswolds, you'll not find a more comprehensive resource than this. It's packed with information on places to go, people to see, and things to do. While the site is incredibly well built out, it is still very quick and easy to get around, which is always a plus in our book. It's all ordered very nicely too - by each point of interest you'll find a brief description, photo, and Web link. Much of the site is aimed at the tourist market, but locals will find stuff of interest too, including clubs and activities, community events, and a bulletin board.

GeoExplorer
GeoExplorer Speaking of comprehensive, cast your eyes over this fantastic site and you'll discover a whole new meaning for the word. If you need a geography resource, you'll find it here. While it is probably most useful for students and teachers of geography, anyone with a general interest in the subject will find something to entertain. We liked the GeoFacts section - did you know that the world's worst earthquake happened in Egypt/Syria in 1201, and over 1 million people are thought to have died? It ain't all trivia, of course - there are details of some serious research projects going on all over the globe, and hundreds of resources for your own investigations.

Parker's Online
Parker's Online Looking for a new motor can be a stressful business, which is why a little gander at Parker's Online would be a good idea if you're on the hunt right now. There's a price comparison tool to show you how much (or how little) your poundage will buy you these days, and some thorough road test reviews for many makes and models. Unfortunately the Car Chooser tool has been temporarily disabled, so you'll have to rely on your own mathematical powers to find the most compatible vehicle for you. Then again, Parker's do provide you with the necessary finance, dealership, and insurance resources, so a few sums shouldn't be too taxing.

Maiden 2
Maiden 2 "In 1998 when Tracy Edwards and her all female crew arrived in Chile after losing their mast in the Southern Ocean, they had been at sea for 60 days. They had been attempting the Jules Verne Trophy to be the fastest non-stop team to sail around the world." Now that's a challenge and a half. In true Blues Brothers style, Tracy has put the band back together, and is attempting the race again this year. Not only that, but they intend to take a whopping ten days off the current record. This official site contains regular updates from the crew, profiles of the team, and a good look around the boat too. Fingers crossed.
