Picks of the Week: 15th April 2002
|
|
Welcome to Picks of the Week for the UK and Ireland! If you have a suggestion for a cool, useful, or quirky site you'd like to see included in a future edition, why not send us an email? |
Bubblycrew
This bright and breezy site is the home of Hammersmith and Fulham young carers' project. The Bubblycrew is a group of teenagers
who look after members of their family who are sick or disabled. The site is fast, fun and informative with descriptions of their
experience as young carers. Some of the stories will have you reaching for the tissues, but on the whole, the site is presented
in a no-nonsense factual manner with contributions posted by other young carers and care workers. An excellent forum for debate, Bubblycrew
also offers a 'Carers Centre' with much-needed links and events listings.

Classic Comedy
Need a giggle? Look no further. If you are into retro comedy, then this one is for you. The site is run by Richard Bentine, son of
former Goon Show star and 'Potty Time' host Michael Bentine. The main attraction here is a selection of downloadable classic
TV comedy moments, including sketches from Monty Python, The Goon Show, and Benny Hill. Sadly, the 'Cinegrams' service where you can
send clips to a friend or enemy is not up-and-running yet (the site says end of April for this feature), but there is plenty to
amuse yourself with in the meantime. Altogether now, "Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries!"

Hill's Angels
Following on rather nicely from Classic Comedy is this cracker of a site dedicated to those moments when your dad used to go all
quiet in front of the telly. No, not Pan's People folks - this site is an unashamed shrine to 'Hills Angels'; those lovely ladies who graced television
screens week in, week out, on The Benny Hill Show. Here you'll find pictures galore, video clips, and a whole lot of Benny Hill
links. There is also an in-depth report of a real-life lunch meeting with one of the Angels, Sue Upton, which has to be read to
be believed... A warning - please don't visit if you are offended by small expanses of exposed flesh. Or Seventies hair-dos.

KFCworld.co.uk
From chicks to chicken (who on earth writes these links?) with this finger lickin' good site dedicated to the world
of Kentucky Fried Chicken. For those who 'can cook, will cook', there are a couple of attempts at emulating the 'secret recipe'
- we haven't tried these recipes, but they sure do sound tasty. Elsewhere on this poultry-tastic site, you'll find the history of
Colonel Sanders, the man who started it all way back in the Fifties with a franchise operation based on sheer determination.
Apparently the site is maintained by a nice fellow called Jimmy Little, a self-confessed KFC fanboy.

Victorian Dictionary
This is most, most fascinating, this one. The Victorian Dictionary is a guide to the social history of Victorian London, using works
by a variety of writers from the period, including Dickens and Poe. The subjects range from advertising to crime, disease, sex and politics,
and each article is clearly presented with a bibliography link if you want to read more. Don't visit if you are put off by texty
sites, but do visit if you're up for a glimpse into the real world of Jack the Ripper and 'Knees Up Mother Brown'. And it's likely
to make you feel deeply thankful for all those mod-cons and new fangled gadgets we have these days.
