Picks of the Week: 8th April 2002

|
Welcome to Picks of the Week for the UK and Ireland! If you have a suggestion for a cool, useful, or quirky site you'd like to see included in a future edition, why not send us an email? |
3D Films
As you might expect from an animation company, this site is brilliant. With some great
interactive features, such as changeable music and background images, the team has
really found a great way of showing its stuff. The company specialises in
creative design and character based 2D and 3D animation for TV and film. We like the
look of Internet detective Floyd the Droid, who investigates
crime on the Web (he'll
never be short of work then), and George, the knight who "believes he is heroic, but
is really just a bungling fool." Sounds like another George we know...

Colchester Museums
If you fancy a cultural day trip in the South East of England, how about checking out this site
for inspiration? Colchester is the oldest recognised town in Britain, so it's certainly
got plenty of history to show off. The site offers comprehensive information on the museum
collections, special exhibitions, and conservation of exhibits, so it's great for
research or just personal factfinding. Did you know, for example, that there was an
earthquake in Colchester in 1884? Or that the town's castle was once used as a gaol
for witches?

Art.ie
Speaking of culture, how about paying a visit to Art.ie ("The All Ireland Arts and Entertainment
Website")? You'll find the latest news and best links to a range of museums, exhibitions,
heritage, and more throughout the country. You can browse at your leisure, or search by
town, date and type of event, so it's a very simple way of finding out what's on
and where. You can also let others know about events in your area by adding listings
yourself.

Slug and Lettuce
After you've trekked around all those museums and galleries, and immersed yourself
in British history, you'll no doubt be needing a little time to unwind. The Slug
and Lettuce chain has bars up and down the country, so you'll easily find one where
you can pop in and chill out. The site tells you exactly where to find your nearest bar,
and provides all kinds of information on food, competitions, and promotions, including
a Student Art Tour and the footie
World Cup,
of course.

Body Worlds
If you're a little squeamish, here's an exhibition (and web site) you might want
to avoid. There has certainly been a lot of publicity and no shortage of controversy for
this London showing of Gunther von Hagen's work. It's an anatomical exhibition
"that provides unique insights into the healthy and diseased human body." Featuring real
human bodies, we hasten to add. Some of the examples on show are unique in the field
of plastination,
so it's pioneering stuff on show. The exhibition runs until 29th September at the Old
Truman Brewery on Brick Lane, a suitably sinister setting, we feel.
