Picks of the Week: 25th March 2002
|
|
Welcome to Picks of the Week for the UK and Ireland! If you have a suggestion for a cool, useful, or quirky site you'd like to see included in a future edition, why not send us an email? |
Keenmac Pubs
Now this, no pun intended, is pure genius. For those of you who like a
pint,
the pubs offered on this site are well within staggering distance. Yes, this is a dream come true - you can pop out for a beer and you need go
no further than the bottom of your garden. We kid you not! Keenmac Pubs is an Irish company specialising in mini pubs for your garden. They come
with a variety of themes and there is even a list of names to choose from - everything from the 'Craic 'n' Goal' to the 'Outside Inn'.
Now, if we can get one installed at Picks Central, it could save us a fortune in cab fares home.

BBC 6 Music
Now it might sound like science fiction but there
really, honestly is a BBC Radio Six. 6 Music is a digital radio station available through your TV set which also broadcasts over the Internet.
When we Pop Pickers listened in, they were playing a mix of Sophie B. Hawkins, Peter Gabriel and The Stranglers. Not bad, and the site
has up-to-date listings of all the latest events and guest slots. For us, the most intruiging prospect is the weekend rock show hosted by
none other than Iron Maiden
frontman, Bruce Dickinson. Let's rock!

Filmtwentyfourseven
What with all the news about the
Oscars, you might want to take a peek
at this cool film site. Filmtwentyfourseven describes itself as, "London's independent film scene laid bare," but also has a lot to offer
for film fans outside the Big Smoke. The site's real strength is its reviews section, which are up-to-date and honest. There are a few
interesting features in the News Archive, a Spike Jonze competition, and a funky 'Top Seven' (this month - "Top Seven Fight Sequences!").
And if you find yourself in London and feel like avoiding the West End, there's a very useful guide to the city's independent and
art house cinemas.

Spamradio
Dunno about you, but we think the endless spam mails can get a bit tedious sometimes. Not a day goes by without some get-rich-quick
scheme (or advert for improving the size of parts of your anatomy) invading your email inbox. If you're sick of
spam dear reader,
then this site might be just the tonic. Those crazy kids at Spamradio have devised a system to turn the text from those emails
into voice files, which are then put to an ambient music track and streamed for your listening pleasure. The effect is strangely
soothing. We must warn you though, some of the content is not for the easily offended due to the nature of some of the email messages
- something the spammers seem to care little about when they send it out every day...

Celtic Cornwall
Everyone knows there's more to Cornwall than pasties. Okay, so the pasties are incredibly tasty and irresistable, but cast them
from your mind for a wee while. Celtic Cornwall is a portal for all things Celtic in the region, including Cornish language resources.
The folklore and genealogy links are top-of-the-range, and you'll find useful links on education, art, history and local government.
For locals and visitors alike, Celtic Cornwall will let you know what's what in this thriving community. Now, about that pasty...
