Welcome to Picks of the Week for the UK and Ireland! If you have a suggestion for a cool, useful, or quirky site you'd like to see included in a future edition, why not send us an email? |
Entertainment in Wales
Well girls and boyos, as you may or may not know,
Saint David's Day is celebrated on March 1st. What better way to explore the red dragon than with this fabby Welsh site? The site makers have built an entertainment directory listing
a diverse range of musicians, performers, and facilities like bouncy castles and venue security. Elsewhere, you'll find other useful Wales-related links
and a guide to getting listed if you are in the entertainment game.
So if you're getting ready to mark the event with a party on Friday, you
might want to pay this one a visit.

Gloucester's Former County Asylums
Okay, so it might not have the snappiest title in the World Wide Web, but Gloucester's Former County Asylums really is worth a visit. It is, of course,
common knowledge that we at Picks Central are no strangers to those funny jackets that fasten at the back. We spent many happy hours perusing the
history of these monuments to the treatment of the insane. The site covers both Horton Road and Coney Hill hospitals with detailed histories and photo galleries past
and present. And did you know you'd have to fork out £2 18s 6d for one of those funny jackets in the 1800s? Straight up.

Cockney Rhyming Slang
Cor blimey guvnor! Would you Adam and Eve it? An entire site dedicated to
that fine art of Cockney rhyming slang. So, have a Jam Tart, use your Uncle Ned and have a Butcher's Hook
at the English to Slang/Slang to English dictionary. Visitors will no doubt marvel at the sometimes
baffling array of oddball phrases on offer here, but just think how you'll save Chevy Chase by knowing
what an Auntie Ella is! Reader be warned - some of the words here are on the wrong side of risque, but
if you didn't have a Danny La Rue why Ronnie Barker was always harping on about Bristols in the hit comedy show
'Porridge', at least you'll know now. Enjoy.

The Trial of Jack the Ripper
Now this is one Londoner you wouldn't want to practice your rhyming slang with. Jack the Ripper's true identity has remained
a mystery since the infamous Whitechapel murders of 1888, so the folks at Discovery Channel decided to re-open the case with
an interactive 'trial'. The votes are in and it seems that James Maybrick, alleged author of the 'Jack the Ripper Diaries', is the
nation's favourite. If you're an amateur sleuth yourself, you can check out the cases for and against the four suspects on
this spookalicious site. Sorry, but our money is still on Francis Tumblety, the dodgy American doctor.

Walkers Showcase
In a nutshell, Walkers Showcase is an Internet gallery enabling schools
to display children's work on the Web. It provides a great way for family and friends at home to view what the children
are doing at school. What's neat about this site is that parents and kids can get equally Web-savvy together and the
latter might be more enthusiastic than ever about homework! Some of our fave works are the renditions of David Beckham, but
most astonishing of all are the Web movies and music compositions. 'Zorg - bringer of nightmares' is described as, "A planet
with vast seas, where the
wind howls. It's a scary,
frightening place." Ace.
