Picks of the Week: 18th February 2002
|
|
Welcome to Picks of the Week for the UK and Ireland! If you have a suggestion for a cool, useful, or quirky site you'd like to see included in a future edition, why not send us an email? |
Will Young
Well, who'd have thunk it? Last October we chose Pop Idol as a Pick of the Week, and
now, four and a bit long, long, very long
months later, we have the show's winner, Will Young, featuring again. It's been emotional,
hasn't it?
The site is pretty
much what you would expect from the well-oiled machine that produces
Popstars and Pop Idol - simple to use and easy on the eye. It will obviously be built out significantly
as Will's CV expands, and some sections will be requiring registration after the first
few weeks.

Tate Modern: Warhol Exhibition
"More than any other artist of his generation, Warhol showed us that the ubiquitous
imagery of mass culture had come to reflect and shape contemporary life." Indeed. This
exhibiton was originally organised by the Neue Nationalgalerie in
Berlin, and
runs at the Tate until April, so there's plenty of time to pay a visit. The coolest
thing on this site is the Warholiser - surfers can send in a photo of themselves, and the
best ones will receive the full Pop Art treatment and 15 minutes of fame to boot.

BBC Sport: Winter Olympics
The Winter Olympics might not catch the imagination in the British Isles in the way its summer
sister does, but no-one can deny the athleticism and sporting prowess of the participants.
Once again the BBC has come up with top notch coverage of the Games, providing team profiles,
event guide,
results and statistics, and a nifty little
snowboarding
game too. There's certainly been enough incidents over the last week or so to fuel
excitement, what with judging scandals and crazy speedskating gold medals.

Shark Trust
Sharks have long been the victims of fear and paranoia, and organisations like
the Shark Trust face an uphill battle in convincing the public that these feelings are,
in fact, grossly misrepresentative. But it's not all public relations - they fund research
and develop conservation programs worldwide, not just for sharks, but also rays
and skates. You can get the lowdown on a variety of species, and the latest news from
the scientific community.

Parents At Work
"Parents At Work helps children, working parents and their employers find a better
balance between responsibilities at home and work." The organisation campaigns
for parents' rights, while advising companies on how to maintain a flexible and
motivated workforce - sounds ideal, huh? So if you need advice and information
on childcare, employment rights, flexi-time and any other workplace related issues
this is the place to come.
