Picks of the Week: 11th February 2002

Welcome to Picks of the Week for the UK and Ireland! If you have a suggestion for a cool, useful, or quirky site you'd like to see included in a future edition, why not send us an email? |
Slack Babbath
Altogether now, "Da, da, da-da-daaaaa!" Okay, so Black Sabbath is the band responsible
for a squillion Beavis and Butthead air guitar solos, but they still rawk. If you missed
the Ozzfest appearances by this seminal metal band, fear not. Tribute band Slack Babbath
is on hand to polish up your Iron Man and prevent you from feeling Paranoid. We at Picks
Central wonder how far the Babbath boys are willing to take their art however - anyone
fancy a bat for lunch?

Slades Anglo-Saxonia
If that metal mayhem has got you all, "Grrr, tiger!" then why not pay a visit to this
hairy, sweaty, sword-wielding site. Dedicated to 'Eald Anglisc ond Beowulfian matters'
(that's Old English and stuff about Beowulf) the pages are extremely busy and crammed with
links and images covering Anglo-Saxon history and ancient English. Old English is the name given to
the germanic language spoken in Southern Britain until about 100 years after the Norman
Conquest - back in the days when 'cool' probably meant you were freezing your bits off.

JobCentre Online
Those looking for work in Northern Ireland will definitely want to check out this site.
Job vacancies are broken out under eighteen different headings, making it easy to browse
for different jobs just as you would in a real job centre. The listings can be a little
unstable in some browsers, but the amount of information on offer makes being persistent
more than worthwhile. Elsewhere on site, jobhunters will find an extremely useful links section
and contacts list.

The Film Factory
A firm favourite at Picks Central is that giant billboard ad for Monsters, Inc. which
proclaims, "You won't believe your eye." The Film Factory is the UK Buena Vista site
and has the scoop on Monsters, Inc. and other hot releases like The Royal Tenenbaums.
There's an archive section where you can get the low-down on older films like, erm,
Spy Kids, a UK Box Office chart, and links to online ticketing sites. Our favourite has
got to be the making of feature on Monsters, Inc. Our eye is well and truly in disbelief.

I am dyslexic.com
Those in the know rate this as one of the best sites on the Net dealing with dyslexia.
If you check it out, you'll see why. The site has been put together by Barnaby, a twelve
year-old dyslexic who says in his introduction, "I use a computer in school so I have been
though all the things a dyslexic person goes though. On my web site you can find lots of
helpful things." He's not wrong - there is a really cool section with step-by-step spelling
advice and the 'What to do when it all goes wrong' part about computers will be inspiring
to all sufferers. This is a colourful and informative site which will be of
help to anyone visiting.
