Picks of the Week: 28th January 2002
|
|
Welcome to Picks of the Week for the UK and Ireland! If you have a suggestion for a cool, useful, or quirky site you'd like to see included in a future edition, why not send us an email? |
Formula1.com
The richest sport in the world is currently gearing up for another
season of glamour, girls, champagne, and the odd bit of fast driving. The
first race takes place in a month's time in the sunny climes of Melbourne,
where Michael Schumacher will be looking to repeat last year's victory. You can
stay abreast of all the news from testing with Formula1.com, as well as team
and driver profiles, calendar, and loads more. In the humble opinion of the Picks
Team, this is easily one of the best sport sites around. Hands up who thinks
David
Coulthard is going to be Champ this year.

Pubclick
London can be a big and confusing place, even for folks who live there. So a few
pointers are always useful, especially in the nightlife sphere. This handy little site
has reviews and listings for a variety of
bars, pubs, and clubs
all over the city.
You can search by types of drinks served, scene, and area, and although the results are sometimes
a little wayward (e.g. the first hits for a search on Live Sports and North London were
for bars in the West End), it's still a decent way of finding new venues in the capital.

Family Records
Genealogy is becoming an increasingly popular hobby in the UK. For anyone thinking
of researching their family background, this would be an
excellent place to start. It's easy to navigate and presents a wealth of information
and links to family history sites on the Web. You'll find details of all the Home
Nations' Archives and Public Record Offices, as well as those from the India Office.
While there are no records of specific families on the site itself, it will point you
in the right directions.

Mistral's Millennial Mash
It's not often that a personal homepage makes it as a Pick of the Week, but then again,
it's not often that a soft toy makes a web site. This one from stuffed horse Mistral
is certainly imaginative -
it includes some of his deep
philosophies, favourite expressions
(e.g. "waaschy waasch" and "nip nay nayle"), and exotic holiday snaps. We were
particularly impressed with his photographs from Nepal. He sure gets around,
this Mistral.

6 Nations Rugby
The first Six Nations matches took place at the weekend and it's shaping up to be a good tournament
already. Unless you are Welsh, Scottish, or Italian, of course. It's certainly one of the
most exciting and passionate sporting contests around, and if you're looking for stats, team news
and match dates, this site will provide it all and more. The
Irish
had the biggest win on Sunday, but will have a big test away to tournament favourites
England in their next match.
