Welcome to Picks of the Week for the UK and Ireland! If you have a suggestion for a cool, useful, or quirky site you'd like to see included in a future edition, why not send us an email? |
Eighteenth Century England
History needn't be a mystery with this fabulously crafted site. Okay, so it's been put together
by our American cousins at the University of Michigan, but don't let that put you off. First
developed in 1999 as an alternative final project option for students on 18th century
literature courses, the site has grown steadily ever since. The 'Upper-Class English Dining Experience' section is a
joy to behold. Elsewhere, you'll find a collection of
well-presented, informative projects exploring diverse aspects of 18th century life from
female etiquette to army salaries.

In-public.com
Moving onto more contemporary offerings, this site has a collection of 'Street Photography'
from a variety of artists. Street Photography is, apparently, "About seeing and
reacting, almost by-passing thought altogether, it is for this
reason that each Street Photographer's work could be seen
as a psychological self-portrait." Of course, if that's all gobbledegook to you
then check out some of the picture galleries and decide for yourself what it all
means. In addition to the pictures there are photographer's biographies, which should
help with the aforementioned psychological profiling.

Long Time Dead
The latest in a long line of teen horror flicks has a refreshingly detailed official site.
Pitched as a mixture between The Exorcist and Trainspotting, Long Time Dead tells the story
of a bunch of kids who unleash a demon after playing with a ouija board. Pretty soon, the screaming
and running about begins as one by one they are murderlised by the fearsome Djinn. The site is
pretty creepy and contains a hidden keyword search game which will unlock more spooky stuff
in the 'Attic'. The folks at Picks Central had to sleep with the lights on after visiting this
site - you have been warned!

Mortgage Code Compliance Board
From horror movies to the horror of moving. To some, there's nowt as frightening as getting a mortgage.
But perhaps more terrifying is the prospect of lumbering yourself with a bad deal. Fear not, as the Mortgage Code
is here to protect you. The Code, "Sets the standards of good practice as to how mortgage lenders and brokers deal with their
customers." The Compliance Board site offers clear and useful information for consumers and
practitioners alike.

Urquhart Castle
Don't know about you, but we wouldn't fancy paying the mortgage on this place.
Urquhart Castle, on the shores of Loch Ness, attracts tons of visitors every year. If you can't
visit just yet, or would just like some background information, you are just a click
away. The site has colourful maps and illustrations of the castle, in addition to a history
of the castle's turbulent history - a history which looks set to continue with the controversial
construction of a new vistor's centre at the site.
