Halloween Pick or Treat: 29th October 2001

Welcome to Picks of the Week for the UK and Ireland! If you have a suggestion for a cool, useful,
or quirky site you'd like to see included in a future edition, why not send us an email?

Altogether now, "Ghoul Britannia... Britannia rules the graves." This eerie site is crammed with facts, reviews, and trivia from the proud history of British horror films. The contents of these cinematic coffers mainly focus on films from the golden days of Hammer Horror with plenty of in-depth reviews for you to sink your teeth into. And if you know your Frankenstein from your Quatermass, you might want to try your hand at a trivia quiz.

If you're old enough to remember Halloween 1992, then you'll also remember being scared silly by the Beeb's Ghost Watch. The show caused much controversy with several disgruntled viewers phoning in to complain about the apparent death of Sarah Greene and the 'possession' of Michael Parkinson! The show was a fake documentary concerning the exploration of a house said to be haunted by a ghost called 'Mr Pipes' - will the BBC ever re-run the show, and if so, are we brave enough to watch it?

Until such a time, we can always make do with Urban Gothic. The British horror anthology series has now entered its second season, and the site has a splendidly spooky feel to match the mood. You might want to think twice about the competitions though - apparently, "Top prize each week is an individually chopped and unwashed human finger from the friendly cannibal's "finger-bowl..."

For Halloween parties across the land, home and garden become spookhouse and dungeon. If you need some inspiration, why not drop by at Stephen King and Peter Straub's Black House. That's right, the horror authors have teamed up again to deliver a monster in the form of 'The Fisherman' and his mysterious house which is black from top to bottom... Even the windows (shudder). For more decaying decor tips we suggest a visit to The Dungeons where you'll find spooks galore from these fiendish tourist attractions. Beware Jack the Ripper as you traverse those dark, dank dungeons!

Still hungry for more? Fortean curios and creatures of the night await you at Mystery Magazine - our favourite being the revelation that Spring Heeled Jack returned to these shores in 1983. Who's Jack? well, this 19th Century spook would, "Emerge from the darkness, his mouth spewing flames, his eyes like balls of fire and his icy claws intent upon attacking young women." And if that ain't scary enough, check out all the other mysteries on offer - everything from poltergeists to Ghostly Black Dogs - but beware! Curiosity killed the cat.

Now, if you catch one of those black dogs, you should check it for fleas. If you've been following the TV documentary series Plague, Fire, War and Treason, you'll know that the Great Plague of 1665 was caused by fleas carried by rats. There are lots of gruesome facts and figures about the disease on this site in addition to the Great Fire of London, the Gunpowder plot, and the English Civil War.

Our final Pick of the pumpkin patch is this bloodcurdling feast for the eyes. Vampire Nightly is, "An after-lifestyle portal for vampires," featuring Gothic style hints, horror-scopes, and Halloween fun. Our favourite is the Bloodscope, a device that predicts your blood type - something which may come in handy as the site was put together by the National Blood Service to attract new, ahem, blood.

A happy Halloween to you all!
