RTE News - Foot and Mouth

As the foot and mouth crisis continues, this site from RTE will help to keep you informed of local, national, and international developments. It traces the outbreak of the epidemic in Ireland, Britain, and Europe, and shows the current number of confirmed, suspected, and precautionary culls in these regions. It also provides lots of useful information on this highly contagious viral disease that affects practically all cloven-footed mammals including cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and wild herbivores such as deer. If you are unfamiliar with the symptoms of foot and mouth in animals, or don't know what disinfectants to use, or are just looking for travel advice, check out the regulations and guidelines. Also listed are do's and don'ts for the general public to prevent the spread of the disease. RTE also provides an update of sporting, entertainment, and public service cancellations, plus what visitor attractions have re-opened. National and local helpline details are also available to assist with more specific queries.

There's a slinky show, competitions, and you can even find out why a mozzarella, basil and tomato pizza is called 'Pizza Margherita'. What's that got to do with engineering? Mannix will tell you!

Tullamore Dew

Irish monks were the first to invent whiskey when they distilled "Uisce Beatha", or "Water of Life", in the 6th century AD. So it is not surprising that Irish whiskeys are renowned for their distinctive taste, since they did have a head start! Tullamore Dew has continued the tradition of Irish whiskey making since 1829 and has become one of Irelands most widely distributed whiskeys. So what gives this whiskey its distinctive taste? Now that would be telling! There is lots of great information on the distinctions between Irish, Scotch, Bourbon, and Canadian whiskeys. If you want to find out more about the town of Tullamore and it famous whiskeys, check out the heritage centre. Whether you enjoy your whiskey on its own, over some ice, or with a little water, Tullamore Dew may be for you.

Mílaois na Gaeltachta

This collaboration between members of two Irish Internet companies, Aró and Local Ireland, and Údarás na Gaeltachta, aims to encourage the Gaeltacht communities to embrace the Internet and its related technologies and seize the opportunities presented by the information age. The site is in both Irish and English and provides an overview of the project and how it plans to integrate the Internet and Irish life to leverage e-business opportunities. The main aim is to build a comprehensive Gaeltacht site on the Irish portal Local Ireland with the co-operation and participation of local schools, groups, organizations, businesses, and the general public. You can view the layout of this site using the "choose a Gaeltacht" option to link you directly to the Irish portal.
