Picks of the Week: 28th May 2001

Welcome to Picks of the Week for the UK and Ireland! If you have a suggestion for a cool, useful,
or quirky site you'd like to see included in a future edition, why not send us an email?

For Kids By Kids Online

A site for kids by kids? You'd be forgiven for imagining all kinds of mischief. But rather than giving instructions for water bomb building or itching powder recipes this site has some serious tips on offer for cyber-kids. The name of the game here is empowerment - FKBKO aims to help children to protect themselves in cyberspace using simple tools. Sample conversations illustrate how kids can keep track of their online banter and archive their messages. Whether you're a kid, or a concerned parent, this excellent site from the University of Central Lancashire's Cyberspace Research Unit is a great resource.

About Edinburgh

Done Edinburgh? If not, you'll definitely want to go after visiting this kick-arse site. And if you've been already, you might just want to go back! No-nonsense information about the old town, castle, and other attractions is presented in smart monochrome. There is an excellent accommodation section, and a chirpy section on Edinburgh's climate which says, "Edinburgh has a reputation for being a wet city, grey and misty much of the time." Don't know about you but we're packing our bags and heading up right now.

IrishBarstaff.com

Now here's a thing. According to the folks at irishbarstaff.com, "The presence of Irish staff is seen as a critical success factor in Irish pub concept operations. Indeed, research has indicated that Irish concept operations employing Irish staff are likely to be up to 70% more profitable than those who do not employ Irish Staff." So, Irish pubs need Irish staff to maximise their profitability? No problem. This site provides recruitment services for both jobseekers and employers, although there's little more than registration forms here at present. We're sure it'll be a full-bodied site once it's settled though.

Survivor

Imagine an episode of The Krypton Factor where a bunch of hopefuls are dumped on an island and forced to run around doing team activities and you've pretty much grasped the concept of Survivor. Of course, as well as the obligatory dashing around and setting off flares, the activities here include chomping on maggots and trying to scupper the other team. We particularly enjoyed the "Two Tribes" section, which includes astrological profiles and "Tribal Horoscopes" of the contenders. Only on the telly could rugged island survivalists be known as Adrian and Charlotte.

Powerkiteshop.com

Check out the intro to this site. "Powerkiteshop.com is about kites, buggies, boards, and kite powered toyz." Hallelujah! If you're looking for something fun to do with your hands, feet, and associated limbs this summer then a visit here will do you right. There's an assortment of flying, swooping, skating, floating things on offer here. Snazzy design and macho statistics ("Ultra-light foil can fly in virtually zero wind conditions...") show off the 'warez' to full effect.
