Precious Little One
This site is dedicated to the chubby little people who spend their time sleeping, drinking, crying, and wetting themselves (no, not Paul Gascoigne). Advice for parents of babies and toddlers is on offer, including health, education, and pregnancy advice. The tips on naming children are especially useful (perhaps little Bunforth Ulysses Matador Junior could be named a little more kindly), and they've very helpfully found things for budding mums and dads to buy too. At Picks Central, we spend the balmy afternoons of summer wishing we were kids again, rushing around on monumental sherbert-and-Panda-Pop highs and hurling ourselves head first from rusting climbing frames onto concrete playgrounds. Things have changed now - Attention Deficit Disorder has been invented, and parents are now less keen to see the fruit of their loins' brains dashed against paving stones. Still, these safe, environmentally friendly frames, floor markings, and picnic tables look like great fun, and there are plenty of imaginative structures to play in (we've asked our boss for a ship for the foyer). Bit of a hotchpotch of everything education related here, from news for teachers to discussion rooms for parents ("How can I stop my son from becoming a stuntman?" was one of our faves), as well as online resources, as well as a slightly spooky kid's area that has games, discussion rooms, and chat. The idea has been brought over from the US and the continent, and it looks like becoming a handy resource for children, parents, and teachers alike. We grew up watching Wales' greatest superhero, SuperTed, save the world from the dastardly Tex and sympathising with the skin problems of his chum Spotty. It's a delight to see that the company responsible is still going strong, producing cartoons like Sali Mali (who has been teaching children Welsh since 1969), and the surprisingly racy Hilltop Hospital. Sali and the Hospital's animal staff both have their own sections, with games, pictures, and introductions to the characters. Surprisingly, the site's entirely in English, and the fun bits are pretty slow-loading, but it's a must for nostalgia hounds and kids alike. If this is all a little juvenile for you, you might prefer to direct you mouse to what's billed as, "The UK's leading interactive community of people aged 50(ish!)". A brief trawl of the discussion rooms and articles finds goodies like an idiot's guide to grandparenting, a long strand on docu-soaps (Castaway 200 being the clear favourite), health tips, a techie jargon buster, and senior sport reports. Most of the content is written by the users, and there's a lot of it - this is one of the most active community sites we've seen here at Picks Central. Go silver surfers!
