National Pet
Week
Hope you had a good Bank Holiday Weekend? If, like us at Picks Central, you spent most of your time pampering that puss or doting on that dog you might like to go 'w-w-w-alkies' over to the National Pet Week site. Now in its thirteenth year, Pet Week aims to promote responsible pet ownership and communicate the value of pets and working companion animals. The site offers advice on putting on your own pet event and a searchable map of events already underway. There's a really useful links section too, with everything from guide dogs to rabbit charities. National Pet Week runs across the UK from 5th - 13th May. Jolly hockey sticks? Well, if you're hockey-mad like the guys at Hockey Heaven, this site will put a smile on your face. There's loads of news on all things hockey related, including a special UK news section, a hockey agony aunt ("My boyfriend spends too much time playing your daft sport...") and coverage of the Hockey Heaven Summer League. There are tons of links, shopping areas with lots of lovely kit, and a searchable tournament database. What we liked most of all however, was the witty, irreverent style. Hockey Heaven proves that this is a sport for those with a lust for life! "Hubble, bubble, toil and trouble..." Actually, this cauldron is less 'eye of newt and wing of bat' and more about tasty organic vegetarian snacks. If the foot-and-mouth crisis has left a bitter taste in your mouth, you might want to sample the delights Cauldron Foods have on offer. The site is simply designed and will help the uninitiated to get get acquainted with their range. Tofu is the main attraction here, with several different types on display, in addition to main meals like nut roast and falafel. What got our tummies rumbling at Picks Central were the vegetarian sausages, including cheese and leek and cracked pepper varieties. Now, where'd we put that charcoal for the barbecue? Bah. Humbug. You all know the feeling - you have to be somewhere at a certain time. You plan ahead, leaving a few extra minutes in case of error. But nothing can prepare you for the stress caused by your train being late, leaving you to pick up the pieces at the other end. We are notoriously bad at complaining effectively on these shores and this site aims to improve the situation. A simple emailing facility exists here so that disgruntled commuters can go online in their coffee break and send a complaint directly to the train company involved. It goes like this: Stressed out, type, click, sigh, and thus gain a sense of closure. Until next time... Spring and, dare we say it, a hint of summer seems to have sneaked into our inclement weather system of late. What better way to celebrate this miraculous turn of events than with a seasonal beverage? And what, pray, could be more seasonal at this time of year than a nice cold glass of cider? This friendly, fruity site offers a peek into the Merrydown vat where you'll find details of their ciders and fruit juices, along with some cool recipe ideas. Shloer and vodka jellies for afters anyone?
