Delia Online
Norwich City's mumsy peddler of culinary delight has a very tasty site, with all of the recipes, guides to equipment and basic cookery skills, and immaculate presentation you'd expect. The extras - Delia's diary (football exploits with the Canaries to come soon!), weights and measures info, and the opportunity to ask the domestic diva for cooking tips - are equally delightful. There's no doubting Delia's commitment to the online life - she's, "Utterly filled with wonder at the achievements of a younger generation that has produced and continues to produce such amazingly sophisticated technology." Ah, but ask us to bake a soufflé... Not an opportunity for scalding of unfortunate areas, nor a specialist interest site of the credit card-requiring variety, but an odd mixture of recipes, restaurant reviews, men's and women's lifestyle features, and weird foodie artwork by Zan Aanz. We especially enjoyed the strawberry meringue roulade and the horror horoscopes (we were worried to discover that the write-up for our star sign was that we are, "Inclined to be careless and impractical, causing you to make the same mistake over and over again. People think you are stupid." Somerset Beekeepers Association We're not avid apiculturalists here at Picks Central, being city coves and scared of beasties with nasty stings, but we found ourselves fascinated by this site. The tips on technique, advice for beginners, and information about honey and wax, are all interesting and informative, but the really racy stuff is in the section on life in the hive. We are treated to the details of bees' breeding (the queen lays more than her weight in eggs in a day) and sex lives (drones get certain, ah, delicate bits of their anatomy ripped off when they mate). And we thought EastEnders was exciting. One aspect of life at Picks Central is that we're constantly having our assumptions overturned. For example, when we were told that a bunch of journalism students had put together a site, we assumed that it would be a guide to the best bistros in London, hangover cures, or doorstepping technique. Turns out that instead they've used their reporting talents to offer kids advice about sport, nutrition, and health. From allergies to yoga, the wannabe features editors have done a first class job. Two guitars and a drum machine ... no, you can stop steeling yourselves for a Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine comeback, this is the altogether different, and altogether more Japanese Yumi Yumi, and their blend of garage tunes and punchy lyrics (see "I Am Right"). Alright, the site is less than state of the art, with basic graphics, a few reviews, and some wav files thrown in for flavour, but it's charmingly done. And it has Lego men.
