"Throw the switch, Igor - tonight we shall create life!"
Igor shuffled to the wall and grasped the lever in the monstrous grip of his one good hand. Sweat ran down his misshapen face and his hump quivered with the force of his exertions. At last his uncanny strength told, and the handle moved, crackling as tremendous power coursed through the ancient wiring, scavenged from the townsfolk's old computers. The dank cellar was filled with the sound of metal grinding against metal and the smell of burning coal, as water, diverted from a long disused canal, began to cascade into a mighty engine, driving round the rusting hulk of a vast iron wheel, and escaping, screaming, as steam. Only an animal cry of triumph rose above the cacophony: "At last, my faithful assistant, at last, I have reached the culmination of my life's work! My creation will prove my theories right, and stalk my foes through the night! The world will know that I, Doctor Pickenstein, am the greatest engineer in history, and my enemies will cower before my genius! Mwa-ha-ha-haaaah!" As if in response to his frenzied yelp, cogs sprang into life, spinning faster until their load, enormous feline mutations with their backs entirely coated in butter, suspended over small pieces of immaculate deep-pile carpet, span in perpetual motion. The night rang with the howl of the hellish kitties. As the things that were once cats formed a tabby blur, sparks began to appear between two vast metal spheres, flooding the darkest areas of the laboratory with blinding light. Now the sparks were one constant searing glare, and the thing on the slab began to convulse violently. Eventually, it rose, sweat glistening on its massive brow, its stocky frame bristling with coarse hair. Pickenstein had succeeded where the great Frankenstein, the dastardly Fu Manchu, and the twisted Dr Moreau had failed. Before him stood the missing link, brought back to life!
