Picks of the Week: 19th February 2001

Camelot Theme Park

Much excitement and frivolity was to be had at Picks Central upon discovering this Holy Grail of a site. Camelot Theme Park, in Lancashire, was created in 1984 and stands on the site of a Benedictine monastery. The land was given to Roger of Poitou by William the Conqueror as payment for his help in invading England. It was then passed down to Sir Henry de Lea, who built a manor house known as Park Hall. A local entrepreneur rebuilt the manor house in 1973 and developed a hotel on the site, incorporating a show jumping arena which was used in the film 'International Velvet'. There is plenty more history and myth on the site, which has just the right mixture of fun and facts.

Janet and John

For something a little more high-brow, may we suggest Janet and John? This is a great place to for parents and kids to get something fun and educational out of the net. Ideally for kids aged 3 to 8, the site encourages interaction between parent and child as much as it does between families and computers. There are stories to read out loud, counting games, and also lots of solo activities the little ones can tackle alone. Some of the areas are slow-loaders, but we are now addicted to Janet and John's Rocket Matching game, so it's worth the wait.

Red Direct

We at Picks Central do like to keep abreast of the latest fashions. Anoraks, bum-bags, leg-warmers - we're 'with it' and no mistake. To tie-in with London Fashion Week, this cool women's lifestyle magazine has a preview of the designers displaying their creations on the catwalk. There are also sections on shopping, eating, going out, and beauty - the only downside is the annoying pop-up window which will haunt you throughout your visit. A chat area and range of e-cards make up for this however, and you might just want to spend your coffee-break here more often.

Talk Eczema

Eczema (also referred to as dermatitis) is a common and distressing condition resulting in dry skin and is caused by external or internal factors. The severity of eczema ranges from red itchy patches to larger areas of the body which are sore, inflamed, and bleeding. Eczema cannot be cured, but it can be controlled. It is especially distressing for children, but many do grow out of it. This excellent site has a lot to offer sufferers and their families, with information on effective skin treatments and documentation of individual cases. There are also plenty of helpful links and a 'Find a Friend' service, so those with eczema can support each other.

GCSE Launchpad

There's always more to learn, and if you're in the mood for brain-food, the GSCE Launchpad is the place for you. You begin your journey on the bridge of your starship, and navigate your way through the galaxies and star systems of subjects via a series of fun pop-ups. All the major subjects are here, offering information on everything from Noah's Ark to arc welding. Our only gripe is that it can be difficult having so many pop-ups open at a time, leaving you a bit lost in space at times. That said, this is a stellar resource.
