Picks of the Year: 31st December 2000

A13 Artscape

We haven't paid so much attention to a length of road here at Picks Central since that rather unfortunate incident after the Christmas party. This beautifully designed site explains the public project based around the less-than-lovely East London road, encompassing architecture, design, and community performance art. It doesn't tell you where you can get a kebab or burger within 5 minutes of the road, though.

Dean and Nigel Blend In

Way back when, we confessed to having discovered this curiosity - the funniest site we'd EVER seen on the Internet. Believe us, it wasn't just lip-service; as the enduring charm of Messrs Dean and Nigel testifies. Okay, so we're still waiting for our calendar, but the guys with the guises keep coming up trumps with their blending-in antics. Still don't know what it's all about? Check out the site already! There are, of course, always contenders for the throne in the realm of funny and freaky sites - and this year we were spoiled for choice. Pylons became pin-ups, the Euros got kinkier, and Yorkshire showed us it ain't so grim oop North. Our American cousins gave us the biggest run for our money however, with the loveable space alien that is Mr Winkle...

Emporium of Fruit

It was a great year for fruity sites, this one being our favourite despite, so far as we can tell, having nothing whatsoever to do with fruit. On the other hand, it does contain some extremely funny stuff, the spoof Robin Williams biopic Man On Some Coke being our favourite. Sadly, there won't be any new content from now on, but the same team has moved on to new projects that are equally amusing. What next, you may well ask - bananas in game shows or melons campaigning for free speech? Well, you never know.

80sNostalgia.com

And so it is written:
"When two or three children of the Eighties gather together, they will break Taxi bars and drink Quatro and speak of Rainbow, Bagpuss, and TV show credits. And so it came to pass that there was a great deluge of nostalgia sites, but these three were mighty in the site of Picks Central."
Here endeth the lesson.

Papa Lazarou's Pandemonium Carnival

The Internet can be a very scary place. All those Error 404 messages, mullets, and pop-up windows... Although this site (where the scariest guy in cyberspace is waiting to make you his wife) will make all that look like a teddy bear's picnic. And if you were lucky enough to catch Papa Lazarou's command performance in the League of Gentlemen Christmas special, you too will be reluctant to sit on Santa's knee ever again. Other horrifying HTML highlights for Y2K included terrifying urban legends, a barrage of B-movies and a host of other bloodsucking freaks. When all's said and done however, second scariest on the web to Papa Lazarou must be TubeHell. Anyone who has traveled on our capital's Tube system needs this site - whether it was Heaven or Hell for you, this site continues to fan the flames of redemption.
