Pot Noodle
The long winter evenings are getting colder and colder in the UK and Ireland. Here at Picks Central, we've found ourselves seeking something exotic to warm our collective cockles and keep the shivers at bay. Well, it doesn't get much more exotic than the Pot Noodle site, that's for sure. Packaged like a particularly garish religious cult newsletter, the site creators have used their noodle and not let it all go to pot. A little pop-up window will warn you of the many dangers and temptations provided by rival snacks and the scary Stark Spoon of Evil. The Kettle Chronicles page is perhaps the most peculiar of all with a parallel universe style history of the Pot Noodle. Our favourite diversion though was the Savage Mullet - a place where deviants are punished with a head-full of curly noodles. Still craving some spice, we staggered into the Currybox site and attempted to order some poppadums and several lager beers. No such luck, as the Currybox chaps offer DIY Indian meal kits so you can impress your friends with your new-found curry-nary skills. The kits are delivered to your door and include herbs, spices, and lots of suggestions for what to do with them. A range of pots and pans are also on offer, but the most entertaining feature comes in the form of a glossary section - here you can tackle those tricky terms like 'Fenugreek' and, erm, 'Mixed Spice'. Maybe take that one with a pinch of salt. Still, it stopped us from feeling chilli. Now, the Taboo site was perfect for washing down the hot stuff. Stylish and inviting, the site offers fashion and beauty pages, and all things related to the fruity alcoholic beverage. We went straight for the cocktails section, where we quickly learned how to mix Taboo Woo Woo, a Taboo Voodoo, and lots of other things with Taboo in the title to offer your granny at Christmas. The nation's favourite, apparently, is an ample measure with lemonade and twice as much mixer. And if that don't keep you warm, then the crazy pink backgrounds and party atmosphere of this site will. All this exotica can go to your head. What better way to sober up than with a visit to the World Gallery. Here you'll find a selection of framed or unframed prints to brighten up your day by the likes of Waterhouse and Collier (Lady Godiva can grace the walls of Picks Central anytime). And if your tastes are a little more surreal, then why not check out the Surrealists section featuring works by Dali, Magritte, and Man Ray amongst others. There's also a handy Top 50 section which includes a children's selection featuring Disney and Beatrix Potter characters. Switch on the other bar on the electric heater and feast your eyes on some hot arty-facts. If like us, you have slipped on your fingerless gloves and can still see your breath, it might be an idea to have a butchers at Conde Nast Traveller. This is the UK version of the well-known travel magazine and is packed with destination ideas, features, and other wanderlust-inducing features. If you truly are a sucker for punishment then head straight for the slideshow which kindly shares snapshots of people sunnin' it and funnin' it in the bars and streets of Brazil. Of course, this might be too much if you're dreaming of a sandy Christmas and the travel guides are there to help you. We loved the guide to surfing beaches and might just have to nip out of Picks Central to try our luck at surfing some waves as well as web sites...
