Picks of the Week: 4th December 2000

Wellll Heh-lew and welcome to the Graaand Final of MasterPicks 2000. Our esteemed critics here at Picks Central have saaampled the finest in home-cooked food sites for your delectation. But enough gaaaassing, on to the menuoo:

In the Red Kitchen, Cooking by Numbers has prepared a meal under the deceptively simple principle of using whatever is in the kitchen to prepare a delicious repast. It finds out what items you have hanging around in your fridge, and presents you with recipe ideas based on your leftovers. Worried that your pasta technique isn't up to scratch? Fear not, instructions for basic cooking are included on the side. The programme is completed with a slice of Cheddar served in a Cave of outstanding natural beauty, with information about local attractions. Gorge-eous!

In the Blue Kitchen, Get Me The Manager has taken a very different approach to consumption. They've combined a system of consumer reviews of online stores with complaint support for punters whose internet purchases have gone pear-shaped. You can also contribute to the melange of reports of difficulties in making online purchases, hopefully helping to make the whole process easier in future. If that's all a little too dry, sample Groovy Chocolate, a dish that can be delivered, personalised, to your loved one's door.

In the Yellow Kitchen, the starter of Porridge is a con-sommé of jail bird in a sitcom sauce. Although the presentation is a touch on the basic side, both the quantity and the flavour of the information cooked up are satisfying. Continuing the theme, the main course of Fish and Chips surveys the fast food establishments along the length of our fair isle, with ratings for the quality of fish, chips, peas, and service. Again, a basic dish, but worth a look if you're hunting for a gourmand's delight in Grimsby.

Well, we've masticated, contemplated, and cogitated our way through another week's entries, and this promises to be an agonisingly difficult decision - surfers, it's over to you. In the meantime, I bid you adieu. I'm going home to curl up with a nice mug of Horlicks, and some bed-time reading about sleep and dreams. If I can't nod off, I might try following some of the advice on their site. Maybe I can find out what that weird dream about being chased through a keyhole by David Frost means too.
