21stcentury.co.uk
Here at Picks Central we sometimes like to dust off the old crystal ball and look into the future. The chaps at 21stcentury.co.uk do much the same thing, but don't worry - you won't have to cross their palms with silver first. Here you'll find futuristic vehicles and news on the latest gadgets and gizmos. Some areas are surprisingly old skool, like the Trekkie jokes and airbrush art galleries, but all in all this site gives a glimpse of things to come. Our favourite diversion was provided by the games area which offers snazzy updates of classics like Rubick's Cube and Pacman. If all that futuristic star gazing leaves you cold, perhaps you'd like to step back into the time machine and travel back to yesteryear. The History Bookshop is a busy, easy to use site packed full of tomes on a wide range of time periods and subjects. There is also a newsletter, and loads of strangely addictive biographies of historical figures. We found the Year View feature to be a bit wobbly, but the timelines more than made up for this teething problem. So, if you want to be sure not to mistake Aelfric for Archbishop Aelfric ever again you know where to go. For wisdom of a more oral nature, or simply for wisdom teeth, sit back and say, "Ahhh," as you peruse this fascinating site. Okay, so our knees trembled a bit when we checked out the section on dental implants complete with animated drilling and capping, but we were quickly more engrossed than grossed-out. There are numerous sections for patients and dentists alike, including children's dental health and tips for nervous patients. The pictorial dictionary gives simplified definitions of the areas of the teeth and the equipment used to rescue them. Call us suckers for punishment, but we especially loved Dr S.J. Nangle's movie studio and its cute depictions of mouth ulcers and fissure sealants. Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity Everyone likes to do a bit of work for charidee, mate. The creators of this site have done more than enough to provide a webspace for such a worthy cause. You're invited to take a tour round the hospital and its many specialist wards as you take in the history and purpose of Great Ormond's. The simple, colourful design will appeal to children as well as adults, not to mention the activity centre and ecards. There is also a Peter Pan game area for kids which invites you to navigate the Neverland forest in search of buried treasure. Just watch out for those pesky pirates! Cornucopia, from the Museum and Galleries Commission offers a directory of collections up and down the country. A dazzling array of cultural treasures are to be found within these extensive listings, many of which have accompanying pictures and links. You can browse by subject, geographical area or museum name, making this an ideal resource for teachers, students, or folks planning a day out. At present, Cornucopia only covers England; with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland "coming soon".
