Picks of the Week: 13th November 2000

British Toilet Association

We got caught short at Picks Central this week. Rather embarrassingly though, the khazi we snuck into was minging. The seat was broken, graffiti and, erm, other messages were everywhere and there wasn't an attendant in sight. The chaps at the BTA have obviously had similar experiences, claiming that British toilets were once the envy of the world. The site carries a mission statement to 'represent the interests and aspirations of lavatory providers, suppliers and users'. Seems like some serious toilet training is in order.

Rockoptic

Now we're just potty about this one. Anyone who rolls up their jacket sleeves or believes that pigs can fly will find numerous surreal diversions at Rockoptic. It will go all widescreen on you and is heavy on graphics, but once you're in you can marvel at galleries of album artwork by Storm Thorgerson, Roger Dean and Finlay Cowan. Featuring such greats as Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here' and Yes' 'Tales From Topographic Oceans', the site also offers prints of some of the pieces - so mind your wallet. Just, ahem, keep your hands off my stack.

Scoot-About.com

Now, everyone knows that real scooters have engines. This site has loads of them and is packed with treats for urban scooterists. Check out the photo gallery featuring pictures of the latest models modelling the latest models... The site creators have really burned rubber here with a news section, a guide to getting your licence, and listings of some of the best scooters on the market. Scoot-About is mainly aimed at London riders, but there's more than enough here for enthusiasts everywhere.

Rosie and Jim

Sublime and ridiculous, the Rosie and Jim site is surely what the Internet was invented for. Very flashy and audio based (so turn those speakers up kids!) this will divert the children in your household, or the child within you, until well after the cows come home. First, you put your name in, then you get to tell the oh-so-amiable ragdolls how you are. The most fun happens when the canal boat comes along, carrying with it all manner of surprises and games. And if, like us, you derive great pleasure from clicking on things that go 'baaa' and 'mooo' then you'll be well in.

Abbey Road Café

There is much excitement at Picks Central with the new Beatles official site being unveiled as we speak. A perfect opportunity then, to pop into the Abbey Road Cafe - just up the road from the St John's Wood crossing made famous by the Fab Four. The site gives an overview of the history of the area and the Abbey Road studios. The cafe itself offers teas, coffees, snacks and all that, plus a range of Beatles merchandise. Will you cross over?
