Rugby League World Cup 2000
We're in the final stages of the showcase tournament of the professional game, and there's a bit of argie bargie in the scrum between the favourite, the official site, and the surprise package of the competition, World of Rugby League. The first has live chats, player profiles, and betting advice - the second's coverage of the student and women's competitions, statistics, and elegant layout makes it a hot tip for the top. Both have all the news and coverage you'd expect from a top flight side. This, in the words of the almighty Mottie, could be a dress rehearsal for the final. If you're like us at Picks Central, you'll prefer your sports news a little more tongue in cheek. And your political coverage. And your obituaries. Conveniently, The Commentary Box offers spoof stories on all of these topics, from details of the hitherto secret society of professional goalkeepers (as told by David Seaman, an elder of the cabal) to Feel Good with Gielgud, the late thespian's fitness video. This site will be attractive to visitors confused by the myriad confections of the British Isles, or natives looking for an exotic sugar buzz. Ever wondered what a Hershey's or a 3 Musketeers taste like? Missing White Rabbit Chews from your childhood in China? Want to collect the entire Freddo tribe? (Australians are lucky enough to have Honeycomb Freddo, Strawberry Freddo, Milky White Freddo, Peppermint Freddo, and Original Freddo - a girl band in the making!) Well, this site can see you right by posting you the goodies. Sweet. Sure and Breast Cancer Care have produced that most unusual thing - a health education site that's good to look at and interesting to read (punning titles aside). Breast cancer is the biggest single killer in women aged 35-54, and Britain has the highest mortality rate in Europe, so any attempt to increase awareness is welcome. The site includes information about detection, research, and treatment for women and men (who account for 1% of cases). In addition, there are personal accounts, celebrity interviews, and food and fashion features. The Royal British Legion provides support to ex-servicemen and their families, from solving War Pension problems to helping homeless former soldiers who have had traumatic experiences. Half of the Legion's funds come from sales of poppies, the symbol of the war dead, and the site contains information about the work of the Legion, donations, and the two minute silence at eleven o'clock on Saturday. |
