Picks of the Week an original screenplay by Picks Central Scene 1: Picks Central Building - Interior - Night A YOUNG MAN saunters into the office carrying a pair of boxing gloves. He walks over to a computer terminal in the centre of the room. He sits down and starts browsing the Internet. To his surprise, he sees his own name, Billy Elliot, come up on the screen. Clicking through the site which bears his name, he can't help feeling a sense of deja vu. BILLY (talking to himself) Wow, this is a great site. It has pictures and everything I could want to know about what could be the Brit-flick of the year... As he throws his boxing gloves in the bin, Billy is spooked by a sound coming from somewhere behind him. He looks nervously around... (CUT TO) Scene 2: Stairwell - Interior - Night A JANITOR mops the stairs. He has headphones on, playing loud music. He is dancing crazily as he works. CLOSE UP: on his headphones. We hear the music which he sings along to out of tune. JANITOR (singing) Lah lah lah, lee lee lee, The Box is the only site for me - it has the chart that fills my heart, with dizzy, happy glee... The camera GLIDES up the stairs - the Janitor's singing getting fainter. As the camera reaches a set of emergency doors labelled ROOF ACCESS we: (DISSOLVE TO) Scene 3: Roof - Exterior - Night A PRETTY GIRL with a telescope stands on the roof. Her breath is illuminated in the cold night air by spotlights which swoops through the sky like spectral birds. All around her twinkle the many lights of the city. Her eyes widen as she takes in the fabulous architecture which surrounds her. Her face expresses her need to learn more about these buildings. She retracts the telescope and looks down at the structure beneath her feet. Crouching down, she gently touches the concrete with her fingertips. PRETTY GIRL (whispers) The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth... (CUT TO) Scene 4: Beach - Exterior - Day A SURFER stands on a beach, out of breath. He is all wet and bedraggled from surfing. SOUND of the waves crashing in. He grins rapturously as he sees a friend tackle a big wave. A MOBILE PHONE rings. He reaches into a kit bag and pulls out his phone. SURFER (in an Australian accent) Hello? (pause) Hello Dad! Wassup? (CUT TO) Scene 5: Living Room - Interior - Night The Surfer's FATHER sits in an armchair. He has a look of pure nostalgia in his eye as he glances at an old television programme on the screen in front of him. FATHER (speaking into phone) Wasssuuup? SURFER (voice through the telephone) Wasssuuup? FATHER Just sitting at home watching the soaps. (FADE OUT) THE END
