Picks of the Week: 2nd October 2000

Young Travellers

On occasion, we at Picks Central peel ourselves away from the monitor and get out and about for a bit. The movers and shakers at Young Travellers have pulled together a great site full of handy tips and fun facts for people already in the UK and those planning to visit these shores. Highlights include traveller profiles, accommodation listings, links, and a message board full of gripes and grumbles. And for the nocturnal visitor, there is also an eye-opening guide to safely traversing the neon-lit streets of London's Soho.

English Nature

For wildlife watching of a more traditional kind, may we suggest a peek at English Nature? Packed with information accessible through a clickable map, this is nirvana for the nature enthusiast. Select an area and you'll soon know about the local flora and fauna. The emphasis is on conservation and there are links to lots of organisations dedicated to the preservation of this green and pleasant land. Most fascinating of all is the section on North American bullfrogs. Apparently, these playful creatures were first imported as pets and are now happily gobbling up a lot of native wildlife. The pictures and sounds here will help you to spot any bullfrogs in your back garden.

Kidz United

If you're a kid and you come home covered in mud, or a parent who is called upon several times a week to mend freshly grazed knees, then this one is for you. Kidz United caters for the football mad youngster (and oldster) with all the latest news and views presented in the brightest of colours. There is an excellent records section where your host Bob will let you in on all the most impressive footballing triumphs. Other attractions include cartoons, artwork, reviews of footy gear, and interviews. We've bookmarked the television guide so we don't miss any action on the box. Hey, who are you calling big kids?

Animal Ark

Okay, okay, so we refuse to grow up. But if you take a look at Animal Ark, you'll understand why. Based around a series of books for children featuring a wide range of friendly creatures, the Ark people have done a great job of mixing education with fun. There is a pets section with information about the history and lifestyle of your favourite furry friend and a Young Animal Carer of the Year contest. We particularly enjoyed learning all about dolphins, although we now refer to them as Delphinus Delphis of course.

Sorted

If you're more in the mood to go out and play, you might want to get Sorted out with the official site for what looks to be the next big Brit flick. You can spin some tunes as you peruse character biographies and pictures - and feel free to turn the strobe lighting on and off at any time. There's also a trailer for this tale of intrigue and mayhem in London's clubland, directed by newcomer Alex Jovy, who recently bared his soul on television in the documentary Movie Virgins. We advise to approach with caution the sight of Jason Donovan camping it up Madonna-style as a crazy DJ. We feel this could be a comeback for the ex-Neighbour, especially as he's in the company of arch bad boy Tim "Frank N Furter" Curry.
