Picks of the Week: 4th September 2000

Drink From The Furry Cup

A British Onion? Well, not quite, but there are some great moments in this satirical news magazine. We especially liked the suggested variations on the Big Brother programme - Death Row Inmate Big Brother, anyone? The DFTFC team also try their hand at reviews and advice, and allow the user to delight at the MoldCam ("pictures of our very own mug of mold" ... ahh!) and snaps of the hirsute vessel itself on its travels around the world. We think that should provide a good morning's entertainment while you're avoiding the eagle eye of your manager.

9to5Cafe.com

Only Games has provided another source of solace for the terminally bored-at-work, with games (including a miniature car racing game that looks eerily similar to Micro Machines), cartoons, quizzes, and a Lunch Decision Maker. Best of all has to be the relaxation aids, including a lava lamp, complete with authentic stoned hippie. Boss suddenly walks into the room? No problem! Just hit the panic button and - bingo! - you're reading an improving text about productivity in the workplace.

BBC ArtZone

Auntie Beeb has brought out an excellent site featuring poetry, digital art, video and music downloads, and discussion rooms. Exhibits that really stand out include "Poppies" - a war poem that replaces words with flowers ("and afterwards the generals awarded themselves petals") presented graphically, and a 1972 video self-portrait by the art world's Morecome and Wise, Gilbert and George.

Leviathan

The official site of Peter Blegvad's cartoons, complete with quotes about milk on the front page ("Truth, like milk, arrives in the dark". Apparently) - Reload a few times to see them all. Leviathan is a spooky but philosophical set of tales about a baby whose adventures include an Orpheus-like quest for his lost parents and an Emperor's New Clothes skit. Witty and sweet.

Romans in Britain

Ever pine for the days when even Italy feared the Scotland attack? No, we're not talking about the heady days of Ally McCoist, but about the Roman occupation of Britain. Everything is here, from the civilization that existed before the toga boys right through to Constantine calling it a day in 410 AD. We found ourselves sprinkling interesting facts into everyday conversations ("you're going to Bath? It was dedicated to the composite goddess Sulis Minerva, you know"). But that's just the kind of people we are at Picks Central.
