Picks of the Week: 28th August 2000

Long weekends rock - and August Bank Holiday has a dazzling array of all-singing, all-dancing delights to choose from. Whether you're a lounge lizard, headbanger, or happy camper there will be no shortage of ways to wear yourself out come Tuesday morning. Let's get it on!

Fumigate your tent, grab your wellies and get on down to the Reading and Leeds Festival if loud rock music, giant happy crowds and bad weather paranoia is your thing. Doubtless there'll be plenty of air guitar solos and unashamed revellry amidst the scent of teen spirit and warm cider - bliss.

If you get thirsty on your way to Reading, never fear - those kind and considerate folks at The Reading Festival Drinker's Guide have come up with a dastardly plan for inebriation that will lead you to some of the finest watering holes in the area. In addition to the pub reviews you'll find out which beers are available - although some of the details seem a bit "hazy" (hardly surprising, hic).

Creamfields will of course, offer an alternative for those who prefer to boogie to the latest happenin' dance acts and DJs. This trancedelic site will give party goers the lowdown on the event before they don their whistles and prepare to have it large.

Much frivolity will be the order of the day for those wishing to pass on campfire tales in favour of urban legends. And just in case you were thinking the place was all about Hugh Grant, the Notting Hill Carnival comes a-hipping and a-hopping it into town to prove you wrong. No stiff upper lip required here boys and girls, just a tendency to shake your rumpa until the early hours.

For those poor souls who are left indoors over the weekend, the chaps at Hexstatic have a selection of mashed-up beats and digital diversions for you to amuse yourself with. And if you're the type who likes to spin a few tunes to unwind, then the birthday-suited Nude Records site is available for your pleasure.

Over at Picks Central of course, we plan to take things nice and easy. We'll slip on a comfy sweater, settle back in the rocking chair, and strum that guitar along to the musical musings of the king of easy listening Val Doonican. Have a great weekend, one and all.
