Picks of the Week: 7th August 2000

Dean and Nigel Blend In

Okay, we have a confession to make this week here at Picks Central. This site is the funniest site we have EVER seen on the Internet. We mean it too. We're not joking, or being sarcastic, we genuinely believe this is the best thing since sliced bread. We laughed, we cried, we sent it to our friends, we ordered a calendar. Spread the word, people! All hail Dean and Nigel, the new comedy gods of the Internet. What's it all about? Oh, just go and look at the site...

Um Bongo

"Um Bongo, Um Bongo, they drink it in the Congo..." Remember the song? Remember the TV commercial? Now you can visit the site for the fruity drink with the jungle flavour. Did you know that an elephant's tusk is really a big tooth? No? Neither did we until we visited this site, where we also found out some more fascinating animal facts, discovered that they squeeze nine, yes, nine different fruits into Um Bongo, did a bit of wordsearch, then popped down to the pub for something a bit stronger.

Classic Cafes

Ah, the lingering stench of a good fry up. Eggs, sausages, beans, bacon, black pudding, tomatoes, hash browns, piles of lightly buttered toast... This site is a celebration of proper "caffs", more often dismissed as "greasy spoons". Classic Cafes champions the authentic greasy spoon, an institution sadly disappearing from our high streets these days. It reviews some of them, offers a number of resources where you can find out more, highlights some film and TV that feature them, and a whole lot more beside. We read this site clutching weak milky tea in a mug, and we loved it.

The Burgled Helpline

So it won't win any awards in the design stakes, it isn't the prettiest site in the world, but this could turn out to be a useful resource. It's designed to help people deal with the aftermath of a burglary, of which there are apparently 4,500 a day in England and Wales alone. There's a checklist of things to do if you are burgled, a newsletter to sign up for if you want to receive more updates, a table of regions in the UK outlining the greatest risk areas in the UK, tips to make your home safer, and more stuff coming soon.

Rik's Site of TV Themes

Finally this week, a bit of fun and a bit of nostalgia rolled into one. Here's a site that does exactly what it says on the tin. You can download, in Real Audio or MP3 format, a bunch of classic TV theme tunes from days of yore. Marvel at the delights of hearing the Terry & June theme tune again, or re-live classic kid's stuff like Airwolf, Bod, Jim'll Fix It, even Dogtanian & The Three Muskahounds. Our award goes to the original Grange Hill theme though. Frankly, it can't be beat.
