Picks of the Week: 26th June 2000

Nick Drake Files

Little is known about this English singer/songwriter who only ever recorded 40 songs before his tragic death from an accidental overdose of prescribed medication, which deprived the world of a rare talent. Here you can find out much more about the man, whose popularity is likely to increase now, as his music is being used in a Volkswagen commercial in the USA. As far as fan sites go, this is about as extensive as they get, full of hundreds of facts and figures about the man and his music. The A-Z section alone makes you realise that for someone so little-known, his impact was great, and his music deserves a wider audience.

Ayup!

This is an online magazine for Yorkshire, combining a mixture of news, views, reviews, and humour. It's a site that's proud of its roots, and there's plenty of good content here to keep you interested. There's an interview with Leeds-born Mel B, 70s TV comedian Charlie Williams, Doncaster soprano Lesley Garrett, and plenty more in the archives. There's also an excellent look at the phenomena of fanzines, and plenty more insight, irreverence, politics, football, and fun. Ayup! certainly knows how to mix it. Aye, that it does.

Urbanfetch.co.uk

Only launched in central London so far, but here's a site that could catch on and become massively popular. The concept is simple: choose books, music, movies, electronic goods, gifts, or food, and they'll get them to you in one hour. Already successful in New York, if this takes off here, let's hope it spreads to more cities in the UK, as well as more than just the central part of the capital. So if you have a hankering for some Jelly Babies or must have that Palm Pilot before the hour is up, as long as it's between 8am and 11pm, UrbanFetch should hopefully bring it straight to your door.

sweatyBetty

One look at the site, and you could be mistaken for believing this is the lovechild of a certain European online clothes retailer that went bust recently. There's a lot of Flash here, and the design is certainly snazzy. The store itself is actually located in Notting Hill, its online counterpart offers a variety of women's clothing including beachwear, snowwear, and accessories. But despite the clever design, the site is still fairly fast and easy to navigate without being too complicated.

Efes Kebab & Burger House

Okay, so it's hardly groundbreaking, nor is it going to win any awards, but it's a crucial part of British pub culture. This is the first kebab house web site we've seen online in the UK, there may be more for all we know. But in a little part of Shrewsbury "opposite the sorting office, under the bridge by the railway station", there stands Efes. Ahh... it sounds so charming and idyllic, summing up everything that is great about Britain, those appetising pictures of the food just make us dribble and drool here at Picks Central...
