Picks of the Week: 19th June 2000

5minutesaway.co.uk

It may not sound like a particularly exciting concept, after all, motorways are hardly the most interesting places in the world, but this site works very well, and could turn out to be extremely useful. It's a directory of services and facilities within five minutes or three miles of motorway junctions. At the moment, it only covers England, hopefully one day it will cover the whole of the UK. So, say you get to Junction 21 of the M5 at Weston-Super-Mare, you'll be pleased, and no doubt astounded to learn, that The Big Apple pub, the Helicopter Museum, and a Lidl Superstore are just moments away.

Fun With Spot

Eric Hill's familiar Spot books have been popular with kids all around the world for many years. Now the little puppy is graced with his own web site... Run, Spot, Run! It's a colourful affair, perfect for cyber-kids, with plenty to keep them amused. Take Spot down to the beach, to the park, or to a party, and play simple learning games, which are appealing not only for their simplicity, but also for their educational value. You can also download clips of Spot's videos, even read Spot's Windy Day on line, and there's useful info for parents too.

80sNostalgia.com

Something for older kids this time. The decade we'll never forget is back with a vengeance thanks to this site. The 80s are remembered in some style here, and with a uniquely British flavour. And what better place to start than the Classic TV index, highlighting all your favourites like Button Moon, Jimbo and the Jetset, and Supergran. The memories section includes such delights as Garbage Pail Kids, Betamax VCRs, even... ahem... white dog poo. But there's more: ZX Spectrum games, and the only message board we've ever seen that mentions Rod, Jane & Freddie and Ivor the Engine.

Solstis

From the moment you click on the URL, the Solstis site attacks you, maximising your browser window and confronting you in all its Shockwave Flash glory. Which is rather appropriate seeing as this is a site for an energy drink that prides itself on its "alertness fast" catchphrase, and the drink's ability to keep you awake. The site has a couple of fun games to play, information on how to concentrate on your exams (independently of drinking Solstis of course) and various other bits and bods to keep you awake at least for another couple of minutes until you get bored.

Bad Cinema Diary

If no-budget, drive-in, and 'B' movies float your boat, then look no further than this fine site outlining the best of the worst. It's easy to navigate your way through - the films are listed alphabetically, and interspersed with numerous pictures and stills. With titles of films featured here like Mad Love Life of a Hot Vampire, The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini, and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, there's plenty here to amuse and amaze. There's also dedicated pages to Hammer's Dracula and Frankenstein, the Godzilla series, and plenty more.
