Cutting edge design is often associated with some of the best in modern furniture, but it's rare that smart design is replicated just as well on the web. Viaduct seems to possess both. The furniture store based in London's Holborn not only sells some of the best in contemporary furniture, but their site with its smoothly animated Flash design, demonstrates just how to make your products look appealing on line. Sadly, there's little in the way of product information or prices (we'd guess that they're astronomical), but that's probably the point - minimalist, but still somewhat intriguing. Another site demonstrating some cool design work is eyestorm, especially if you go for the full shockwave experience. It's essentially a place to discover and acquire contemporary photography - you can pick up an Andy Warhol photo of Muhammed Ali for a cool $9,000 if you wish. The site also provides works by some lesser known photographers and there's some useful links to their exhibitions around the world in case you want to find out more. Add to this some interesting articles, biographies on all the photographers, a chance to discuss your ideas on line and the cool little 'delve' facility letting you group photos by theme, it all adds up to a pretty impressive web package. Channel 4's upbeat and cheeky car programme Driven now has a website to complement the show. 4car manages to cram in a huge amount of information onto the site. More than just a magazine there's road tests of many of the most popular models out there, a buyer's guide, used car deals, a good garage guide, spy shots of cars currently in production and lots more. Channel 4, in typical style, haven't gone about things in half measures, the site proving to be ideal for the enthusiast and even for those with just a fleeting interest in cars. Canned food. It's more exciting than you think. It also can be better for you than you think too. The Canned Food Information Centre On-Line is dedicated to demonstrating the wonders of tinned foods. Sadly we missed the exhibit at the BBC Good Food Show last November, but the site still has plenty to keep us interested. There's recipes to download, some canny cooking tips (their pun, not ours), a page to amuse the kids and nutritional information for food in tins. All in all, it's an informative site, and where else but the web would you find out about such things? Finally this week, a little bit of fun. Mobile phones... love 'em or hate 'em, they're here to stay and they're growing increasingly popular... you'll be reading Picks of the Week on one in a couple of years we're sure. But not everyone is a fan, as the folks at Phonebashing.com will prove. The site is merely a collection of video clips of people dressed as giant mobile phones running up to unsuspecting cellular users, pinching their phones and stamping on them. Are they jokes? Is this for real? It could be considered unnecessarily cruel, on the other hand it could be considered outrageously funny. Shades of Trigger Happy TV - only nastier ;-) |
