Irish Picks - Scottish Picks

Picks of the Week: November 26th

What makes a Yahoo! UK & Ireland Pick of the Week? Sometimes it's a site that makes us laugh, sometimes it's one that's being talked about, other times it's because they're quirky, useful or just plain interesting. If you have any suggestions for cool sites to be included in a future Picks of the Week, why not send us an email? If you only want to view the list of this week's picks, click here.

The House of Lords may just have been reformed, but these Peers are a crafty bunch and know where there's money to be made. The House of Lords Trading Company clearly states at the bottom of the page that it has no connection with the British Parliamentary House of Lords, but proudly boasts that it sells "gifts of distinction to purchase online". Some may disagree - "over-priced useless tat" could be one description. But of course, it's so uniquely British, after all, a long handled design seal set for $35 is just so fascinating... But perhaps we're being overly sarcastic here... after all the site is well-designed, there must be a market for this kind of stuff, and joining Lord Exmouth around the rooms of some of Britain's finest stately homes was just so divine...

Talking of British institutions, what about Richard & Judy? Still going strong after 11 years, the nation's favourite daytime TV couple now have their own site courtesy of ITV. This Morning Online boasts some lovely design but matches this with an impressive amount of content. The site is bang up to date, outlining what's on the show each day, and presents more information than is usually found on sites that supplement their TV counterparts. There's plenty of recipes from the show's celebrity chefs, background on all the presenters and regulars, video and picture highlights from past shows and a lot more. We'd never have thought it, but we're very impressed - it's better than the programme itself.

This week's rather British flavour continues with the simply titled but splendidly entertaining Tea.co.uk. This extensive site covers everything you could possibly need to know about the UK's favourite tipple. From how to brew the perfect cuppa to an A-Z online tea directory, there's enough here to keep you amused for hours. There's even a section for kids, nutritional information and a history of the stuff. By the time you've finished here, you'll have tea coming out of your ears. But of course, it's a jolly important beverage and a way of life, isn't it?

From tea to... lard. Another British institution, and one perhaps we're not so proud of. To counter this, nay, celebrate its very existence in our society, the British Lard Marketing Board has been unleashed onto an unsuspecting public. This 100% deadly serious web site proudly proclaims that lard is Year 2000 compliant, which is a relief to say the least, and a warm invitation from Chairman Sir Hugh Smedley-Farquharson welcomes you to the site. See the ground-breaking advertisements for lard through the ages, delight at the sickening prospect of a lardy pork-pie recipe and laugh at the proudly displayed "not suitable for weirdy vegetarians" signs dotted throughout the site.

But let's spread our wings further afield for our final Pick of the Week. Most event listings are usually city, perhaps country specific... would anyone ever be so bold as to try an ecumenical events guide? The answer is yes, and whatsonwhen.com is their name. And it's not such a bad effort either - it's no mean feat to try and gather all the major events going on around the world and putting them onto one single site. We couldn't find anything happening in Mauritius, but the South Sinai Camel Festival in Egypt, provisionally pencilled in for May 2000, could be well worth a visit, as well as the Father Christmas Symposium in Demre, Turkey next week. Once you get hunting on whatsonwhen.com, especially if you keep your searches non-specific, there's all manner of interesting events to find around the globe.
