Irish Picks - Scottish Picks

Picks of the Week: November 19th

What makes a Yahoo! UK & Ireland Pick of the Week? Sometimes it's a site that makes us laugh, sometimes it's one that's being talked about, other times it's because they're quirky, useful or just plain interesting. If you have any suggestions for cool sites to be included in a future Picks of the Week, why not send us an email? If you only want to view the list of this week's picks, click here.

"Anthea! Anthea!" Once a familiar cry from the world of television. First it was Bruce Forsyth, then it was Larry 'Shut that door' Grayson and now it's Jim Davidson. We're talking about The Generation Game, an endearing TV classic, and now complemented by a web site from our friends at the BBC. After reading the history, checking out the biographies of the presenters and voting for your favourite game, you'll want to go straight to the real reason for your visit: The Conveyor Belt Game! Yes, now you too can put yourself in the shoes of a Generation Game contestant, trying to remember as many items as you can after they've passed by on the conveyer belt. It's just like the real thing.

Remaining on a television theme, remember the show Diff'rent Strokes? If you do, you'll recall its loveable star Gary Coleman, playing a black kid from the Bronx who suddenly finds himself living in luxury in a white household. These days however, Coleman is somewhat of a fallen star. He made millions of dollars but as an adult has gone through two kidney transplants, recently filed for bankruptcy and has been up on an assault charge. Now there's The Gary Coleman Web-A-Thon from the UGO Network in the USA. The Gario Brothers game is worth the entry fee alone, but further highlights include Gary's Auctions, an interview, merchandise to buy including stickers and candles, and the highly amusing Cólémon - a little virtual Tamagotchi-like Gary Coleman which you can feed and play with!

Did you know that October was Crack an Egg Month? October 8th was World Egg Day too. Seems like it passed us by, but never mind, you can always visit the British Egg Information Service web site to catch up. Seems the humble egg has warranted a nice little site, taking its place in cyberspace with great aplomb. Apparently, in the UK, we eat 27 million every day - placed end to end that'd stretch from the Earth to the Moon. But more than just fascinating facts, there's a bunch of tasty looking recipes here, nutritional data and information on what the BEIS actually gets up to. More amazing though, is the fact that our Picks Writer has just managed to get through that entire paragraph without making a single bad egg pun - shame the same couldn't be said for a previous effort.

A new student web site has just been unleashed, going by the name of Student 24-7. More than just a student magazine, 24-7 seems to be covering all the bases. Though its shopping service is yet to launch, there's still plenty here, and it's all focused on the UK higher education student. As well as news and sport, there's online banking, chat and dating (you need to register to take advantage of these), an extensive academic bookshop and the magazine section covering music, film and lifestyle information for students - like how to wake up in the afternoon. Student 24-7 looks like it's going keep on growing and could become the information source for students in the UK.

Finally this week, a new online bookstore called Ottakar's. Perhaps not as immediately familiar as the Amazons and Waterstones of the world, Ottakar's Books new site may just eclipse them in its layout, style and ease of use. As well as the regular search and shopping basket facilities, there's a much more personal touch to your online shopping with Ottakar's gossip, recommendations and quizzes. Each Ottakar's store can be browsed where the staff have outlined their current favourite books, Christmas opening hours and even hand-drawn maps of how to reach them. There's also the 'Ask an Expert' facility that allows the user to fill in an online form to help track down that elusive title. It would seem that Ottakar's value their customers and their love of books really shines through.
