Irish Picks - Scottish Picks

Picks of the Week: November 12th

What makes a Yahoo! UK & Ireland Pick of the Week? Sometimes it's a site that makes us laugh, sometimes it's one that's being talked about, other times it's because they're quirky, useful or just plain interesting. If you have any suggestions for cool sites to be included in a future Picks of the Week, why not send us an email? If you only want to view the list of this week's picks, click here.

Every so often a site crops up which has something for everyone. Liv4Now describes itself as "a new wave lifestyle community site for people who want to live for now". There's a real mixture of stuff here, and it looks like there's going to be a lot more to come. From a review of The Sixth Sense to an Agony Aunt, via a write up of The Turner Prize and a chance to catch up on the latest footy news, there should be something here to stimulate your interest. It's only when you delve deeper that you realise that a lot of the links go to external sites and partners. But perhaps that's the point: Liv4Now gives you the chance to read their content while allowing the user numerous other places to surf, like any good portal should.

If you saw The Blair Witch Project, you may never want to go camping in the woods again. But if you still fancy the idea, then Eurocamp is worthy of a visit. But this isn't your tents-in-the-forest kind of deal, these are big mobile caravans with exotic names like Verona and Siena, some with as many as three bedrooms, freezers and microwaves. You can even do a virtual tour of them if you have the Quicktime plug-in. The Eurocamps are located in most European nations, and once you've chosen your region, there's stacks of information on each camp and resort. Didn't look like you could book online though, which was a shame, as the Picks Team really fancied a holiday camping in Belgium...

If you do a lot of driving, you're likely to need to take advantage of roadside assistance for your piece of mind. The RAC has a new pay-and-go service called Red RAC, and a funky new site to promote it. You pay a mere £1 a month. If you break down, it's £49, if you don't, you don't have to pay a penny more. The Red RAC site is colourful and animated, you can join online or they'll call you back. But information about the service is evidently not enough: the RAC had to throw in a bit of a gimmick on the site, namely The Red Zone. Here there are links galore to all manner of red things in everyday life, from Red Rum to Ferrari, and even a list of the UK's favourite types of curry - Red Hot y'see.

Ben Sherman have a new site too. The famous British clothing company started life in Brighton and stretched to Carnaby Street in the sixties and seventies, and have established themselves as the Mod clothing label to this day. This animated site gives you the history of the label, and the opportunity to check out the new range. Hovering your mouse over any of the models makes them leap or move, which looks pretty cool, clicking on them brings up the clothes and when to expect them in the stores. There's also the addition of a Shockwave game, based upon greyhound racing, and each month, one lucky punter will win a Ben Sherman shirt.

Finally this week, something to get the old grey matter ticking over. Online quizzes sometimes can be trivial, sometimes too simple, but not this one: Etymologic brands itself as the toughest word game on the web, and it could well be right. Most people probably won't even know what the title means, let alone stand a chance in the game - the Picks Team were happy to score a miserable 3 out of 10, but that's probably because our grammar skills is so bad. One of the questions was "Sesquipedalian describes what kind of person?" The answer being "someone given to using long words" - dead appropriate for this web site, but it's certainly fun to give Etymologic a few goes and prove to your friends how smart and educated you are.
